Local youth wins 5K race

Monty Montgomery, an eighth-grade student at Sowers Middle School in Huntington Beach, took first place in his age group and fourth overall in the 5K XTERRA trail run at Crystal Cove State Beach on Dec. 12.

Montgomery finished in 23 minutes 40 seconds on the course that covered fire roads and single track trails in the El Moro area of Crystal Cove State Park, He bettered his time in last year’s run by 45 seconds.

The SOCAL XXTERRA Trail Run is a series of seven races throughout southern California. Division point leaders qualify for the nationals run in Oregon and the world championships in Hawaii in September 2011.

Chelsea FC takes Area 11-K title

Chelsea FC of Region 55 in Huntington Beach won the Under-10 division championship of the Area 11-K Championships on Sunday at Stanford Middle School in Long Beach by defeating the Hot Shots from Region 517 (Santa Ana), 3-1.

In the title game, the Chelsea defense, again led the way. Defenders Dylan MacDonald, Brody MacDonald and Jason St. Pierre were solid against the high-scoring Hot Shots. Neaco Logan and his cousin, Anthony Basaldua, both made numerous key saves in goal and forward Chris Hasse played another strong game for Chelsea.

All the scoring took place in the second half where Chelsea battled back from a 1-0 deficit. Chelsea got the equalizer on a goal by Will Macy in the third quarter, then took the lead for good when forward Sean Muirhead scored a long goal. Muirhead later put the game away when he scored from the right side.

Chelsea moves on to play in the Region 11 Championships Feb. 12-13 in Garden Grove.

Youth baseball camp starts Monday

Huntington Beach High will run its Youth Baseball Camp beginning Monday at the school’s playing fields. The camp is open to boys ages 9 to 14 at a cost of $115 per camper. Daily sessions run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Dec. 30. Instruction will be given by the Oilers varsity coaching staff, with a few professional players slated to make guest appearances.

The Huntington Beach baseball team was a 2009 CIF baseball finalist.

Katin Pro-Am Challenge registration ends Sunday

Registration forms are being accepted for the Assn. of Surfing Professionals (ASP) specialty sanctioned 2011 Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge.
