Briefs: UCI's Taylor touted

Tanya Taylor, an All-American who was the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year in women's soccer as a senior in 2010, is rated the No. 4 prospect among forwards for the Women's Professional Soccer draft scheduled Friday in Baltimore, Md.

Taylor led the Big West in goals (11) and assists (12) and set the UCI single-season record for assists.

She was a third-team All-American and was named to the All-West Region and first-team all-conference teams.

UCI women ranked No. 11

The UC Irvine women's water polo team is ranked No. 11 in the Collegiate Water Polo Assn. preseason poll.

The Anteaters, two-time-defending Big West Conference champions, shared the No. 9 spot in the final poll last season after compiling a 15-14 record.

Coach Dan Klatt's squad, led by first-team all-conference returners Cortney Collyer (a senior) and Jessy Carday, a sophomore who was also the Big West Freshman of the Year in 2010, opens its season Jan. 29 at the UC Santa Barbara tournament.

Senior Caitlin Haskell was a second-team all-conference pick last season.

Stanford, USC, Cal, UCLA and Hawaii comprise the top five, respectively.

Classic tickets on sale

Tickets for the 16th annual Toshiba Classic are now on sale and can be purchased online on its refreshed website,

The Toshiba Classic, Southern California's only Champions Tour event, takes place March 7 through March 13 at Newport Beach Country Club.

Daily tickets for the $1.7 million Toshiba Classic are $20 if purchased in advance, or $25 at the gate. Season patron badges, providing admission to the grounds and clubhouse for practice rounds and the tournament, are $100. Daily patron tickets, providing access to the grounds and the clubhouse on a single day, are $40.

As an added feature to those attending the Toshiba Classic this year, fans will be able to view the new Toshiba Classic Hall of Fame, which displays its inaugural membership beside the practice putting green at Newport Beach Country Club.

Also this year, Fred Couples is expected to return to defend his Toshiba Classic title.

Couples, who once lived in Newport Beach for a short time, shot an impressive 18-under-par 195 in his Toshiba Classic debut, and his third Champions Tour start, to win the Classic by four shots.

He finished the year winning four events on the Champions Tour, as he set the Champions Tour's new scoring average record (67.96) and finished second to 2008 Toshiba Classic champion Bernhard Langer on the Champions Tour's 2010 money list and Charles Schwab Cup points standings.

Couples was named Champions Tour Rookie of the Year.
