SANTA ANA – Junior point guard Nick Dawson finished with 11 points, seven assists and two blocks in the Mustangs’ Orange Coast League opener Wednesday.

Saaeed El-Assadi contributed 10 points and six rebounds for Costa Mesa (7-10, 1-0 in league).

Laguna Beach 59, Estancia 52 (OT)

COSTA MESA — The Eagles couldn’t hold a four-point lead late in regulation and fell in the Orange Coast League opener Wednesday night at home.

Coach Agustin Heredia said Estancia was called for a technical foul for having an extra pleyer on the court, and Laguna Beach made the free throw. The Breakers then hit a three-pointer to tie the score.

After an Estancia turnover, Laguna missed two free throws with just over a second left in regulation, but the defending league champions controlled the action in overtime.

Davon Joyner scored 18 and Chad Fackler had 10 for Estancia (9-9, 0-1 in league), which plays at Godinez on Friday.

Los Alamitos 57, Newport Harbor 51

NEWPORT BEACH — Cody Caldwell scored 33 points to lead the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.

Craig McKennon scored 10 points for Newport Harbor (7-9, 0-2 in league), which plays host to Edison Friday at 7 p.m.

Corona del Mar 15, Northwood 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Junior Diana Murphy scored five goals for the Sea Kings in their Pacific Coast League opener at CdM Wednesday.

Sophomore Ally McCormick scored four times for CdM (7-4, 1-0 in league). Junior goalie Alex Musselman made a season-high 17 saves.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I, is back in action Friday at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. The Sea Kings open against Santiago of Corona at 3:30 p.m. at Dos Pueblos High.

Newport Harbor 18, Huntington Beach 3

NEWPORT BEACH — Maddy McLaren scored five goals for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.

Allyson Hall and Sophie Leveque had three goals each, while goalie Sarah Wilkey made 14 saves for Newport Harbor (10-1, 2-0 in league).

The Sailors open the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Friday, when they’ll play Long Beach Wilson at 2:30 p.m. at Dos Pueblos High in Goleta.

The big Sunset League showdown is Wednesday when Newport Harbor plays against Los Alamitos at the Sailors’ pool at 7:10 p.m.

Costa Mesa 18, Godinez 3

SANTA ANA — Sophomore Kellie Thorsness had a game-high four goals as the Mustangs won their Orange Coast League opener Wednesday at Santa Ana Valley High.

Ashley DeMarzo had three goals, two assists and three steals for Mesa. Fellow senior Sydney Rosello had three goals, three steals and also drew three exclusions.

Aubry Hill and Taylor Ives also scored three goals each for the Mustangs (10-9, 1-0 in league).

Laguna Beach 25, Estancia 3

COSTA MESA — Ilene Umansky scored two goals for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League opener Wednesday.

The Eagles dropped to 6-13, 0-1 in league.
