Local wins gold in Silver State

Giana Costa, a fourth-grade student at Top of the World School in Laguna Beach, captured second place and a silver medal in the girls’ Level 5 division at the 12th Lady Luck Gymnastics Invitational on Sunday in Las Vegas. She posted a personal-best All Around score of 37.80 and finished second in the division to Ellie Bagley of California.

Costa recorded a first-place finish in the floor program with a 9.675 score to win gold. She medaled in all of her events, earning another silver in beam (9.450) and bronze medals in both vault (9.400) and bars (9.425).

Costa trains at Azarian Gymnastics in Aliso Viejo. She is coached by Perry Davies and Vanessa Gonzales.

The Lady Luck Invitational attracted more than 1,700 gymnasts from 31 states and Canada, Australia, Mexico and The Cayman Islands. The three-day event began Jan. 14 and was held at the South Point Hotel and Casino.

Breakers sixth in girls’ water polo poll

The Laguna Beach girls’ water polo team is ranked sixth in this week’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll. Undefeated Dos Pueblos, which defeated Laguna, 10-8 on Jan. 13 and two days later won the Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara, once again tops the rankings. Following the Chargers are Los Alamitos, Newport Harbor, Santa Barbara, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, Foothill, Edison, Palos Verdes and Fountain Valley.

Last week, Laguna was ranked fifth in the poll and CdM was fourth. Santa Barbara, which defeated Laguna, 8-5 last Friday at the Tournament of Champions, made the only leap in the rankings, going from sixth to fourth. The Dons placed second to Dos Pueblos at the tournament.

No other Laguna winter teams were included in the rankings for boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ soccer.

Welterweight champ to speak Sunday in Laguna

World Boxing Assn. Welterweight champion Dmitriy Salita is the featured speaker Sunday at the Chabad Jewish Center in Laguna Beach (30804 S. Coast Hwy.).
