Edison girls’ hoops, boys’ soccer, still tops

The Edison girls’ basketball and boys’ soccer teams continue to hold down the top spot in their respective CIF Southern Section polls.

In girls’ basketball, Edison topped the Division 1A poll. Other girls’ basketball rankings have Huntington fourth in Division 2AA, Ocean View rose from 16th to 14th in Division 4AA and Brethren Christian remained third in Division 5A.

In boys’ soccer, undefeated Edison ranks first in Division 1.

In girls’ water polo Edison and Fountain Valley again are eighth and 10th, respectively, in Division 1.

In boys’ basketball, Edison remained No. 4 and Huntington Beach No. 9 in the Division 2AA poll. Ocean View rejoined the poll at No. 16. Fountain Valley moved up two slots in the Division 1A poll, going from 14th to 12th. Brethren Christian remained fifth in Division 5A.

Thompson wins Explorer Longboard event

Shaun Thompson of Huntington Beach scored a 15.5-point total to win the Explorer Longboard division at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Southwest Conference Explorer competition (event No. 5) Wednesday at D Street beach in Encinitas. Thompson placed ahead of Christian Stutzman of San Clemente, who was second with 13.5 points. Nathan Thompson (9.4) and Lee Toresdahl (4.5), both also of Huntington Beach, placed third and fifth, respectively, in the event.

Toresdahl also was sixth in the Explorer Seniors division.

Other local competitors with top placements included: Andrew Niemann (Huntington Beach), who was second in Explorer Boys; Nathan Young (Fountain Valley) and Jeremy Guilmette (Huntington Beach), who placed second and third, respectively, in Explorer Menehuene; Ben Seaberry (Huntington Beach) was third and John West (Huntington Beach) sixth in Explorer Super Groms and Terry Carmadella third in Explorer Duke.

The next NSSA Southwest Explorer Season event is Feb. 12 and 13 at La Jolla Shores.

Ocean View baseball fundraiser Feb. 12

The Ocean View High baseball program will hold its annual Texas Hold’em fundraiser Feb. 12. The event starts at 5 p.m. at Centerfield Sports Bar and Grill (17296 Beach Blvd.) and a $60 donation is required to play.
