Returners give Laguna formidable lineup

The Laguna Beach boys’ tennis team played its first official match of the 2011 season March 1 and the first under new Coach Peter Davidson. The Breakers went to Villa Park, where they fell 11-7 to the perennial-power Spartans.

Jake Michaels won two sets at No. 1 singles (6-7, 6-2, 6-3) and the Breakers’ top doubles team of Hutton McKenna and Owen Weber also won two (0-6, 6-4, 6-4). Also picking up points for Laguna were No. 2 Benito Romeo and No. 3 Teague Hamilton in singles play and the No. 2 doubles team of Austin Loomis and Morgan Lebby.

Laguna plays a 3 p.m. nonleague match today at San Clemente. Next week, the Breakers host Dana Hills on Tuesday and Corona del Mar at 3 p.m. Both nonleague matches start at 3 p.m.
