Orange Coast def. San Diego Mesa

SAN DIEGO — McKay Smith had 11 kills and five blocks to help lead the Pirates to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-18 Pacific Coast Conference victory Wednesday.

Randy Rye had nine kills on 11 swings with no errors and Brett Anderson had 24 assists for OCC (9-2, 5-1 in conference).

The Pirates play host to rival Golden West Friday at 6 p.m.

Orange Coast 382, Santiago Canyon 392

SANTA ANA — Freshman Mike Squillace shot a one-over-par 73 in the Pirates’ Orange Empire Conference match at Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.

Matt Parkovich (76), Tyler Paul (76), Matt Chan (78), as well as Josh Hurst and Jeff Fuzzard (both 79) also contributed for OCC (5-1 in conference).

Doubleheader

SANTA BARBARA — Visiting Vanguard University dropped a pair of games against Westmont in Golden State Athletic Conference action Wednesday.

The Lions lost a 2-0 lead in a 5-4 setback in Game 1, then fell, 5-1, to drop to 12-12, 8-6 in conference.

Antonio Peraza allowed six hits and one earned run to absorb the hard-luck loss in the opener, in which the Lions had 10 hits and four errors.

Bryce Arroyo went four for four to pace the offense, which produced just four hits in the second game.

Westmont is 11-14, 4-10.

SOFTBALL

Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. — Vanguard University won two games Tuesday, topping Saint Mary of Kansas, 8-0, and Midland of Nebraska, 8-5, at Lincoln Park.

Emilee Reaber allowed five hits in a five-inning shutout and Elizabeth Archer went two for two to lead a nine-hit Vanguard attack against Saint Mary.

In the second game, Kimberly Skoglund drove in three runs, Adriana Venezia drove in two and Amanda Young went two for three for the Lions (16-8).
