Three locals in All-Star match

Corona del Mar High midfielder Brian Ford and Costa Mesa midfielders Dong-Gi Shin and Jesus Estrada are three Newport-Mesa boys participating in the Southern California High School Soccer Coaches Assn. Senior All-Star festivities at Occidental College in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 19.

Ford is on the Division III team, while Shin and Estrada made the Division IV team. The Division III All-Stars play the Division IV All-Stars at 5 p.m.

Ford, who earned first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors, helped the Sea Kings reach the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Ford finished with 11 goals and five assists.

Shin and Estrada, both first-team All-Orange Coast League picks, led the Mustangs to their first postseason appearance in nine seasons. Costa Mesa beat Muir of Pasadena, 4-3, in a wild-card match.

Shin finished with a team-best 11 goals and added eight assists.

Estrada led the Mustangs with 10 assists and contributed five goals.

Loper honored in league again

Sage Hill School senior guard Mark Loper earned first-team All-Academy League honors in boys' basketball for the second straight season.

Loper averaged 16 points, four rebounds and two assists per game and led the Lightning (14-12, 2-8 in league) to the CIF Southern Section Division V-AA playoffs.

Junior forward Taylor Petty made the second team and senior guard Nick Ramming was an honorable mention.

St. Margaret's Mitch Marmelstein was named the Academy League MVP.

Candelaria earns all-league honors

Newport Harbor High junior midfielder Caleb Candelaria made first-team All-Sunset League in boys' soccer.

Candelaria finished with five goals and four assists.

Senior Anthony Jovanelly and junior Brice Manning received second-team laurels for the Sailors (6-12-3, 2-8-0 in league). Newport Harbor finished in last place in league.

Edison's Mitchell Alvarez was named the Sunset League MVP.
