College Roundup: UCI shuts out San Diego State

IRVINE — Andy Lines led four Anteaters pitchers who combined on a three-hit shutout in the nonconference game Tuesday at Anteater Ballpark.

Lines allowed one hit in four innings. He struck out seven and walked one to improve to 2-1.

Nick Hoover pitched three no-hit innings, fanning three, while Jimmy Litchfield and Brian Hernandez each allowed one hit in their one inning. Hernandez notched his seventh save.

Senior right fielder Sean Madigan was two for three with a run batted in and junior first baseman Jordan Leyland was two for four with a run driven in to pace the eight-hit attack for UCI (21-8).

Hernandez was also two for four.

UCI, ranked No. 17 in the USA Today/ESPN poll, scored one in the first inning and two in the third.

The Aztecs are 11-22.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

IRVINE — Concordia scored in the bottom of the seventh to win the opening game, 4-3, then topped visiting Vanguard, 9-0, to sweep the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday.

Stephanie Leisenring had one of the Lions’ five hits and one of their two runs batted in in the opener.

Jennifer Simons pitched a two-hitter in the five-inning Game 2.

The Lions are 21-23, 2-12 in conference.

No. 4-ranked Concordia is 42-6, 12-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene 8, Vanguard 1

SAN DIEGO — No. 1 singles player Lucas Pereira earned the lone victory for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Tuesday.

No. 10-rankd Vanguard fell to 6-12, 4-8 in conference.

The No. 6-ranked Sea Lions are 13-4, 8-3.

SAN DIEGO — No. 1 singles player Gabriela Bergmanova earned the lone set victory for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Tuesday.

No. 10-ranked Vanguard is 10-8, 8-6 in conference.

The No. 3-ranked Sea Lions are 15-1, 11-1.
