Breakers now No. 4 in baseball

The Laguna Beach baseball team is on the move again in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 rankings, this week rising to No. 4. Last week, the Breakers were ranked fifth. Occupying the top three spots again are Bishop Amat, Palm Desert and Oaks Christian. Following Laguna Beach is Torrance, Chino, Indio, Troy, La Salle and La Quinta/La Quinta. Colony and San Dimas fell out of the rankings.

In boys’ tennis, Laguna continues at No. 3 in the Division 4 poll. Viewpoint is ranked first and is followed by Paramount, Laguna, Santa Ynez, Dunn, La Quinta/Westminster, Segerstrom, Westminster, Cate and Linfield Christian. Westminster and Cate are new to the rankings, replacing Buckley and Santa Clara.

Laguna’s boys’ volleyball team remained No. 2 behind top-ranked Corona del Mar in the Division 2 poll. Spots three-through 10 went to Valencia/Valencia, Oak Park, Trabuco Hills, Oaks Christian, Beckman, San Luis Obispo, El Toro and Aliso Niguel.

Zoller wins surf competition

Nathan Zoller of Laguna Beach won the surf competition, the second event of the fourth annual Ultimate Boarder Championship, April 7 at Seaside Reef at Cardiff-by-the-Sea.

Zoller finished 24th in the overall competition. In addition to winning the surf contest, he was 27th in snowboarding and 33rd in skateboarding. The overall champion of the competition was Chad Shetler of Dana Point, who won the Ultimate Boarder title for a third time. Shetler, who placed 10th in snowboarding, 17th in surfing and fourth in skateboarding, won $25,000.

Mike Morrissey of Laguna Beach, who finished 29th in the snowboarding, didn’t finish the competition.

Thirty-six athletes competed in snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding competitions. The snowboarding event was held April 2 at Mammoth Mountain. The skate contest, the final leg of the event, was held Saturday.

Lawn bowling open house is May 7

The Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club will hold an open house event, “Saturday On The Green,” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7 at the club (455 Cliff Dr., Laguna Beach).
