Sailors finish second

SANTA BARBARA — The Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team scored a five-game upset against Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions semifinals Saturday. But the Sailors fell in the final after Santa Margarita swept them, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23, to win the 16-team tournament at Santa Barbara High.

Cody Caldwell and Rusty Sary earned all-tournament honors for Newport Harbor (17-7), ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll.

Caldwell recorded 25 kills in the final, while Sary had five kills. Setter Ian Sequeira had 30 assists and six digs to lead the Sailors in those categories in the title match.

Santa Margarita’s Taylor Hammond was named MVP.

The Sailors beat top-ranked Mira Costa, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-11, earlier Saturday.

Caldwell led with 33 kills, six digs and three blocks. Sary had 19 kills and eight digs, while Sequeira had a season-high 56 assists to go with seven digs and four blocks. Kevin Rakestraw had eight kills and five blocks, and libero Max Richley had 18 digs and two aces for the Sailors.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division II coaches’ poll, earned fifth place in the tournament.

The Sea Kings (19-3) beat Thousand Oaks in the fifth-place match, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22. Parker Brown led with 12 kills, six digs and six aces, while Spencer Haly also had 12 kills.

Brennan Anderson had eight kills and Chip Zucker had seven digs for the Sea Kings.

CdM defeated Valencia in a fifth-place semifinal match, 25-21, 25-13, 25-9. Haly had nine kills and one block, Brown had eight kills and four digs and Jack Reed had seven kills and four blocks.

Nick Curci had 17 assists and Joe Ctvrtlik had 15 assists.
