Anteaters’ Jock singled out

Share

UC Irvine junior Charles Jock has been named the Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s track following his record-setting performance at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Jock won the Invitational Elite 800 meters with a school-record time of 1 minute, 45.19 seconds at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut on Saturday. That time ranks No. 1 in the U.S. and fourth in the world this year.

Jock, who broke his own school mark of 1:45.65 set last year, originally became UCI’s record-holder in the 800 in March 2010 when he beat the previous mark (1:47.6) held for 32 years by three-time Olympian and six-time All-American Steve Scott in 1978.

This is the third Big West weekly honor for Jock this season and the sixth in his career.

Jock earned All-America honors last year and was a gold-medalist in the 800 for the U.S. at last July’s North American, Central American and Caribbean U-23 Championships. He was also named the 2010 Big West Conference Athlete of the Year in men’s track.
