Oilers take two in tourney

The Huntington Beach softball team opened play Monday at the Best of the West Tournament in Santa Maria and posted two victories.

In games played at Righetti High, the Oilers first routed Santa Maria, 11-0. Emily Stoner powered the offense with two home runs and six RBIs. In their second game, the Oilers overpowered Damonte Ranch, 7-0. Micaela Vierra struck out nine in a complete game, and Jillian Martinez led the Huntington offense with three hits. Martinez had six hits in the two games.

The Oilers host Newport Harbor at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in Sunset League play.

Edison: The Chargers suffered their first Sunset League loss of the season in a 3-0 home setback to Los Alamitos, which took over the league lead. Edison starts play Thursday at the Centennial Tournament in Nevada. The Chargers return to league play at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday with a key showdown at Marina.

Fountain Valley: The Barons picked up a 4-0 Sunset League win at Newport Harbor behind a one-hit effort by senior Allison Lang who improved to 6-3. Fountain Valley plays at Los Alamitos at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday .

Marina: The Vikings completed play Saturday at the Michelle Carew Classic and scored an 11-7 victory over Rosary. Marina began the tournament April 13 with an 8-0 shutout of St. Lucy’s of Glendora and also was a 5-1 winner over Foothill. In the win over Foothill, freshman Kristen Struett hit a three-run home run, and Tera Blanco won her 10th game to improve to 10-0. Struett, in relief of Blanco in the fourth inning, got the win, her first of the season, with a one-hit performance against St. Lucy’s.

Marina returns to Sunset League play Tuesday with a 3:15 p.m. home game against Edison.

Ocean View: The Seahawks rode a three-hitter by senior Brittany Hitchcock to score a 2-0 shutout win Friday over Loara. Ocean View, which improved to 3-0 in Golden West League play and has outscored its first three league opponents, 27-0, hosts Segerstrom at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Baseball

Brethren Christian: The Warriors dropped two Academy League games last week, falling, 3-1 and 8-2 to Oxford Academy. Cameron Smith had an RBI-double to account for the lone run in the loss and Bobby Frisch had a two-run home run in the 9-2 loss.

Brethren Christian next plays April 28 against Liberty Christian.

Edison: The Chargers started the San Diego Lions Invitational Monday and recorded a 7-2 win over Otay Ranch of Chula Vista. Jake Lesinski hit a two-run home run, AJ Libunao doubled twice, senior Dalton Douty (3-1) got the win and sophomore Tyler Jones, who came on in the fifth, got the save.

In a Sunset League game Friday, Edison rolled past Huntington Beach, 14-1. Eric Snyder homered, Jon Torres doubled twice and Henry Owens (9-0) posted the pitching win.

Edison, which completes play Thursday at the Lions Tournament, goes back to Sunset League play Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game at Newport Harbor.

Fountain Valley: Prior to falling, 6-5, Friday to Marina, the Barons scored a 7-0 Sunset League win April 13 over the Vikings. Dan Jimenez hit a two-run home run, Matt Gasparro had a solo home run, Taylor Martin and Charlie Stephens both doubled and Martin picked up his third win on the mound to improve to 3-0.

Fountain Valley hosts Huntington Beach at 3 p.m. Wednesday .

Huntington Beach: The Oilers were handed a 14-1 loss by Edison in a Sunset League game Friday. L.J. Brewster doubled for Huntington, which plays a 3 p.m. league game Wednesday at Fountain Valley.

Marina: In Sunset League play Friday, Marina scored a run in the seventh inning to come away with a 6-5 win over Fountain Valley. Senior Lucas Kaplan, who pitched the seventh and was the third of three Marina pitchers in the game, got the win.

Marina hosts Los Alamitos at 3:15 p.m. in Sunset League play.

Ocean View: The Seahawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead through four innings at Orange then withstood a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh by the Panthers, to come away with a 12-11 Golden West League victory. Timmy Robinson tripled and doubled, Blake Walker got the win and Joey Garcia the save.

Ocean View plays a 3:15 p.m. league road game Thursday at Loara.
