Five locals receive hoops honor

Five local players have been gained postseason honors by being named to the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches’ Assn. 2010-11 All-Southern Section Team. The five athletes are: senior Riley Thomas (boys’ 5A), senior Madison Desler (girls’ 5A) and sophomore Sara Hodges (girls’ 5A) of Brethren Christian, junior Rilee Horton (girls’ 1A) of Edison and junior Maya Kennedy (girls’ 2AA) of Huntington Beach.

Edison tops the Division 1 baseball poll. The Chargers are followed in order by Valencia/Valencia, Vista Murrieta, Mater Dei, JSerra, Hart, Lakewood, Adolfo Camarillo, JW North and Simi Valley and Westlake tied for the 10th spot.

In softball, Ocean View is ranked second behind Aquinas in Division 4. After Ocean View comes Segerstrom, La Habra, Dos Pueblos, La Quinta/La Quinta, Buena, Garden Grove, La Quinta/Westminster and Apple Valley and Whittier Christian are tied for 10th. In Division 1, Edison is ranked fifth behind top-ranked Esperanza, Etiwanda, Valencia/Valencia and Sunset League rival Los Alamitos. Spots sixth through 10 are taken by Simi Valley, Pacifica/Garden Grove, Riverside Poly, Saugus and Temecula Valley.

Wolfpack soccer tryout is Thursday

Wolfpack Soccer Club will hold a tryout for its boys’ Under-13 team (fall 2011) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Edison High (back field located in rear of school). The boys’ U13 teams are Silver (possibly Silver Elite in the fall) and Bronze. Youth swim program underway at Edison

A swim program for middle school youth run by Edison High co-head swim coach Diggy Riley is underway this week at Edison. The program, in its second year, emphasizes stroke work and endurance in workouts that mirror those of the Edison swim program and present local youth the opportunity to train with one of the top swim and water polo coaches in Orange County. Workouts run 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. each weekday through June 9. The cost per person is $130. For more information, visit https://www.hbwaterpolo.com.
