Oilers win in playoff opener

Huntington Beach opened the CIF boys’ lacrosse postseason Tuesday with a sound victory.

The Oilers grabbed the early lead on visiting JSerra at Cap Sheue Field, fell behind by two goals but rallied with a strong defensive stance in the second half to claim a 10-6 win.

It was the first home playoff game for Huntington.

The Oilers stunned JSerra by scoring two goals in the opening three minutes of the match. They increased the lead to 3-0, but then the Lions put up a big-time rally by scoring five straight goals to take a 5-3 lead. Huntington, however, came back to take a 6-5 lead at the half.

In the second half, Huntington dominated behind a defense led by Dallas Heyden, Anders Davis, David Mastro, David Abady and goalie Trevor Jackson. The Oiler offense continued to score after the break by posting five goals to win comfortably.

Huntington’s offense was led by Steven Koressel, who had a game-high four goals. Taylor Refice, Grant Lowman, Carsten Beith, Tim Francis, AJ Schaffner and Jace Gan all scored once.

The Oilers play their next postseason game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Margaret’s.

Huntington closed out its regular season last week with two victories. First, the Oilers defeated Servite, 11-8. Tim Francis and Jace Gan led the scoring with three goals each. Beith, Schaffner, Koressel, Refice and Lowman all scored once. Jackson had six saves.

Huntington followed the win over the Friars with a 16-2 victory against Tustin, getting a game-high three goals from Alex Kowalski. Gan, Koressel, Schaffner, Jerritt Rodenas and Francis had two goals each and senior Taylor Muto netted his first goal of the season. Beith and Geoff Lunsk also scored once and Jackson had three saves.

Boys’ Tennis

Marina won its second straight Sunset League title and third in four years Monday by blanking visiting Edison, 18-0. The win capped a 10-0 league season for the Vikings.

Singles players Parker Glore, Kevin Young and Daniel Cancilla each won their sets by 6-0 scores. Glore, who completed last weekend at the Ojai Tournament and reached the round of 16, went undefeated (30-0) in league competition for the second consecutive year. Young posted a 29-1 league mark.

The Sunset League tournament began Wednesday with preliminary play. The league finals are Thursday.

Boys’ Volleyball

Both Huntington Beach and Edison collected Sunset League victories Tuesday.

Huntington Beach swept host Marina, 25-15, 25-17, 25-16, getting 11 kills from Jared Chaffee and 34 assists from Ben Simons.

Josh Gane and Danny McCarty had 14 and 12 kills, respectively, as Edison knocked off host Los Alamitos, 25-22, 25-29, 19-25 and 25-19.

Swimming

The Sunset League swimming prelims and finals are this week at Newport Harbor High. The prelims were Wednesday and the finals are at 2 p.m. Friday.
