NORWALK — Senior Mark Sakioka broke his own school pole vault record and the Newport Harbor boys won their first league title in at least 11 years at Cerritos College on Thursday, with the discus events completed Friday at Huntington Beach High.

Newport Harbor finished with 119 points and is considered co-champion with Fountain Valley, which went 5-0 in dual meets, Coach Nowell Kay said. Los Alamitos was second at league finals with 97 points.

Sakioka was first in the pole vault after clearing 16 feet, 2 1/2 inches, which is No. 2 in the state. His previous outdoor record had been 15-9. Max Van Berg was second in the event (14-3) and Fritz Howser was third (13-3).

The Sailors also swept the top four spots in the shot put, with Ryan Andrews (57-5), Steve Michaelsen (55-7), JB Salem (55-4) and Trevor Lawrence (55-2). They were also the top three in the discus, with Ethan Cochran (181-0), Michaelsen (a personal-best 178-0) and Trevor Lawrence (159-7).

Stephan Vayda was second in the high jump (5-11).

All of the aforementioned field athletes advance to the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries May 14 at Moorpark High.

Academy League finals

MISSION VIEJO — Sage Hill’s boys placed third as a team Friday at Saddleback College.

Jack Percival won the 800 meters in a league-record time of 1:57.19. Freshman Kavi Sakraney won the high jump (5-8) and Luc Angel won the pole vault (12-3). Colton Gyulay was a two-event winner in the long jump (20-2) and the triple jump (41-1 1/2).

Brennan Hicks was second in the triple jump (39-5) and the 4x100 team also qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division IV preliminaries, which are May 14 at Carpenteria High.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Sunset League finals

NORWALK — The Sailors finished sixth in league at Cerritos College on Thursday (discus events Friday at Huntington Beach High). They had three girls qualify for CIF preliminaries.

Paige Tennison was second in league in the 3,200 meters, in 11:04.35. Kasey Thompson was third in the discus (107-0) and Allison Krugman was fourth in the pole vault (10-9) but cleared the at-large entry height of 10-3.

Division II preliminaries are May 14 at Moorpark High.

Academy League finals

MISSION VIEJO — Sage Hill School tied for third as a team Friday at Saddleback College.

Sage Hill senior Katherine Nagasawa won the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 50.15 seconds. Nagasawa also qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division IV preliminaries in the long jump, where she was third (16-2). Elise Sugarman was third in the triple jump (31-5), and the 4x100 team also qualified for CIF.

The Division IV preliminaries are May 14 at Carpinteria High. St. Margaret’s won the league title.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Academy League finals

NEWPORT BEACH — Robbe Simon won the singles title, while the Lightning doubles team of Andrew Kurzweil and Alex Manolakas repeated as the doubles champions Thursday at the Tennis Club Newport Beach.

Simon beat Whitney’s Ramsathwick Pathireddy, 6-0, 6-1, in the final.

Kurzweil and Manolakas defeated St. Margaret’s Alister Murry and Alex Ramadan, 6-1, 6-3, to win the title.

Simon, Kurzweil and Manolakas advance to the CIF Individuals.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

San Clemente 11, Corona del Mar 8

SAN CLEMENTE — Michael Keasey had three goals for the No. 5-seeded Sea Kings who lost in the second round of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Southern Section Division I playoffs Thursday.

Donald Dalton had two goals for CdM. San Clemente is the No. 4 seed.

John Prickett and Dylan Salisbury provided strong defense for the Sea Kings.
