High School Roundup: Playoff update

Three local high school boys’ volleyball teams play respective second-round matches in the CIF Southern Section playoffs Thursday.

Corona del Mar (25-4) plays host to Hart of Newhall in a Division II match at 7 p.m. The Pacific Coast League champion Sea Kings had a first-round bye after earning the No. 1 seed.

Hart (25-7) opened the playoffs with a 25-18, 25-27, 25-12, 25-12 home win against Quartz Hill on Tuesday. Hart finished second in the Foothill League, home to third-seeded Valencia of Valencia.

Newport Harbor is also at home in the second round. The fourth-seeded Sailors (23-8) won the coin flip and play San Clemente (24-6) in a Division I match at 7 p.m.

The two teams met at the Orange County Championships during pool-play action, with Newport Harbor winning. The Sailors went on to win the Sunset League title while the Tritons finished in second place in the South Coast League.

Newport Harbor and San Clemente each swept their respective first-round opponents.

Sage Hill School (11-14) travels to Yucaipa (20-1) for a Division IV match at 7 p.m. The Lightning advanced after defeating Bolsa Grande, 25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 25-14, in the first round at Harbor Day School.

Yucaipa claimed the Citrus Belt League crown and Sage Hill was second in the Academy League.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

CIF Division I Preliminaries

LONG BEACH — The Corona del Mar High boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay team set a school record and qualified first for finals Wednesday at Belmont Plaza.

Ari Marks, Christian Garkani, Blake Motal and Matt Berry touched in 1 minute, 24.73 seconds. The previous school record was a 1:25.27 set last year.

CdM also qualified first in the 200 medley relay, with Jared Namba, Garrett Larson, Garkani and Marks touching in 1:34.89. The 400 free relay team (Larson, Motal, Namba and Berry) qualified fourth in 3:09.08.

Larson led swimmers qualifying for championship finals as he qualified second in the 200 individual medley (1:52.41). Namba qualified fourth in both the 100 butterfly (50.34) and the 100 back (51.34, lowering his own school record).

Berry qualified fifth in the 100 freestyle in 45.96, and Garkani qualified eighth in the back in 52.44.

Newport Harbor’s 400 free relay team (Tom Fisher, Sean Richards, Ryan Fowler and Davy Jorth) qualified seventh in 3:12.56.

The Division I finals are Friday at 6 p.m., also at Belmont Plaza.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

CIF Division I Preliminaries

LONG BEACH — Corona del Mar High sophomore Brynne Wong qualified second in the 100-yard butterfly Wednesday at Belmont Plaza.

Wong finished the race in 56.82 seconds. She was the lone swimmer from CdM or Newport Harbor to qualify for championship finals (top eight) in an individual event.

The CdM girls’ 200 free relay team of Ally McCormick, Tori Gabert, Hollace Barden and Wong qualified seventh in 1:40.19.
