Boys’ Tennis Roundup: Sea Kings dominant in first round

CORONA DEL MAR — The Corona del Mar High boys’ tennis team dominated in its first-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Wednesday at the Sea Kings’ courts.

Shane Korber led the way for CdM (16-5) sweeping in singles as the No. 3-seeded Sea Kings beat visiting Sunny Hills, 17-1. Korber, a Georgetown-bound senior, won 6-0, 6-2, 6-0. Carson Williams also swept in singles, recording 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 victories.

The Sea Kings won all nine sets in doubles.

CdM will face the Temple City Friday at a site to be determined by a coin flip Thursday. Temple City beat San Marcos, 10-8, in the first round Wednesday.

Sage Hill advances

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill School took eight of nine doubles sets in winning the CIF Southern Section Division III first-round match, 14-4, over Corona Wednesday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.

The doubles teams of Alex Manolakas and Kevin Marshack, as well as Sean Batten and Eric Magliarditi, each swept for Sage Hill (16-5). Nasier Emtiaz and Ryan Lee won two matches.

Robbe Simon and Andrew Kurzweil each won both their singles sets for the No. 3-seeded Lightning. Denis Cirit and Garrett Rapport won one set each.

Corona ended its season at 12-8.

Sage Hill plays Upland in the second round Friday at a site to be determined by a coin flip Thursday. Upland beat visiting Lancaster, 16-2, Wednesday.

Viewpoint up next

The Costa Mesa High boys’ tennis team will play host to top-seeded Viewpoint of Calabasas Friday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs.

Viewpoint (13-2) beat Paloma Valley, 18-0, Wednesday to advance to the second round.

Costa Mesa (7-4) advanced because Silverado forfeited in the first round. Silverado, which was scheduled to host, didn’t have enough players to compete because they were ruled ineligible after the team participated in an illegal scrimmage with Hesperia Monday.

Viewpoint is the reigning CIF Division IV champion. The Patriots are vying to win their sixth CIF championship in nine years.

Eagles eliminated

ALHAMBRA — Estancia High was ousted from the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs after losing, 16-2, at Mark Keppel Wednesday.

The Eagles, who finished third in the Orange Coast League, ended its season at 7-12.
