Giants get early breaks to win, 3-2

The Giants parlayed a catcher’s interference call and an error into the winning run Tuesday as they defeated the Twins, 3-2, in Fountain Valley Little League Majors Division action at Mile Square Park.

The interference call and outfield error occurred in the bottom of the third inning.

The Twins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Nathan Young singled before Riley Hanson drove a two-strike pitch over the center-field fence. In the bottom of the first, Drake Sueda and Azael Peralta singled for the Giants and Derrick Weinheimer’s grounder to shortstop was thrown away, the two-run error tying the score.

In the bottom of the third, Alex Frias walked and went on to score the winning run.

The Giants played errorless defense and turned two double plays.

Hanson went two for three and his home run was his third of the season, which ties him with Parker Smith of the Red Sox for the division lead.

Peralta picked up a complete game win, allowing eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Nick Taylor and Young pitched for the twins and didn’t allow an earned run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Twins 14, Westminster Padres 6: Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of fourth inning, the Twins plated six runs on six hits and one error. They added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and one error.

Tanner Motske went three for three with a double, two runs scored and five runs batted in. Nick Taylor went three for three with a double and three runs, Riley Hanson two for four with three runs and an RBI, Mark Volkert two for three and Garrett Gilmore had an RBI Double.

Hanson didn’t allow an earned run on four hits and six strikeouts to pick up his seventh win of the season. Nathan Young pitched the last two innings and allowed one run on two hits.

Red Sox 7, Twins 1: Parker Smith pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks, to power the Red Sox. Smith also went two for three with an RBI double on offense.

Other key Red Sox performances included Jake Bitzer who was two for three with a double, triple and three RBIs, Luke Arnold who had a three-run triple and Kyle Adams, who went two for three.

Nathan Young went two for three and scored the only Twins run and Garrett Gilmore went two for three with an RBI. Nick Taylor went four innings and gave up three earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.

Ocean View Little LeagueMajors Division

Braves 4, Phillies 0: Braydon Salzman threw a shutout Saturday as the Braves earned another victory.

Salzman scored the first run on Jason Mayorga’s RBI single in the first inning. Salzman doubled home James Williams in the fifth to make it 2-0 and later scored on an error. A double by Nathan Crocker in the inning scored Mayorga.

Minor A Division

Red Wings 8, Bees 7: Runs by Jared Reyes and Daniel Mayorga gave the Bees a 2-0 lead but the Red Wings tied the score (2-2) in the bottom of the third and went on to get the win.

After the Bees regained the lead in the top of the fourth, the Red Wings scored five runs. Kyle Nelson’s double scored both Nick Barbisan and Noah Madole and a line drive by Elijah Blake scored Nelson and Mark Stites. The Bees battled back to tie the score at 7-7 but Nelson’s RBI double gave the Red Wings a one-run victory.

Hooks 6, Mets 5: The Hooks scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to earn a nail-biting victory.

Aggressive base running by Nathan Skorheim, Jimmy Campbell, Danny Gallardo and Tristan Kennedy, got the Mets off to a strong start. Lucas Pantel struck out five and turned a double play for the Mets

Minor C Division

Raptors vs. Lugnuts: Strong pitching by both teams dominated the first few innings of the game with the Raptors’ Rielly Bradley striking out three in the top of the third inning. The Raptors scored three runs in the bottom of the third but a double play by second baseman Jim Legg and first baseman James Jones, got the Lugnuts out of the inning. The Lugnuts scored four runs in the top of the fourth and Evan Knife retired the Raptors on three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.

The Lugnuts scored in the top of the fifth and the Raptors scored a few more runs in the bottom of the inning on a rally led by Owen Sideris, Bradley, Quinn Ortiz, Jack Rockefeller and Samuel Cohen.

Iron Birds vs. Grasshoppers: Isaac Ballinas, Miles Lopez, William Lawler and A.J. Hurtado, who pitched a strong fifth inning, all took the mound for the Iron Birds. Ethan Rose started for the Grasshoppers who received a big defensive stop in left-field on a catch by Collin Dubino.
