College Roundup: VU men in quarterfinals


Vanguard 5, Xavier 3

MOBILE, Ala. — The Lions won two of three sets in doubles, as they advanced to the quarterfinals at the NAIA National Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center Wednesday.

Vanguard (9-13) will play against top-seeded Fresno Pacific Thursday.

Lucas Pereira and Alexandre Piccin won at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, and Yahor Kryvaruchka and Samdro Bucher won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. Bucher (No. 3), Piccin (No. 5) and Garrett Gillon (No. 6) won in singles for the Lions.

No. 8-seeded Xavier dropped to 13-10.



Brenau 6, Vanguard 3

MOBILE, Ala. — The Lions won twice in singles, but No. 8-seeded Brenau won the second-round match in the NAIA National Championship Wednesday.

Gabriela Bergmanova (No. 1), and Brittnie Furuvald (No. 2) won in singles for Vanguard (11-11). Anna Valingsten and Ekaterina Gabashvili won at No. 2 doubles. Valingsten and Gabashvili both lost close matches in singles.

Hannah Thompson beat Valginsten at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (3-0), 7-6 (3-0), and Liubov Orlova defeated Gashvili at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 7-6 (4-0). Also, Kate Mazackova scored a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over Vanguard's Kateryna Malakhova at No. 2 singles.

Brenau is 11-7.
