Briefs: Hingis heading to Newport

Former world No. 1 tennis player Martina Hingis, playing this season with the New York Sportimes of World Team Tennis, will play at the Newport Beach Breakers on July 9.

The Breakers announced that Hingis, a five-time Grand Slam women’s singles champion, will play at The Tennis Club Newport Beach on the same night the Breakers have their marquee player, tennis legend Pete Sampras.

Tickets are on sale now for the Breakers, who open their season at home July 5 against Lindsay Davenport and the St. Louis Aces.

Other marquee players scheduled to visit include Sam Querrey of Washington (July 11) and Bob and Mike Bryan of Kansas City (July 13).

Stevens on youth national team

Newport Harbor High sophomore Dan Stevens was named to the 2011 U.S. water polo youth national team Monday at the conclusion of the national selection camp at Newport Harbor.

Stevens was one of 63 athletes who competed over four days at the selection camp. He made the final 28-man roster for the second straight year.

Stevens, a center, was second on the Sailors last year with 55 goals. The youth national team is coached by the Sailors’ former high school coach, Jason Lynch, who was fired in April. Newport Harbor Principal Michael Vossen announced Friday that Robert Lynn was Newport Harbor’s new head coach.

Sage’s Gyulay headed to Harvard

Sage Hill School senior Colton Gyulay has committed to Harvard University.

Gyulay, who excelled in track and field, will compete in the long jump and triple jump at Harvard. Gyulay is the school record holder in the long jump (21 feet, 111/2 inches) and triple jump (44-111/2) and was also on the 400-meter relay team (43.57 seconds) that set the school record.

Perry steps down

Estancia High’s Art Perry has retired from being the girls’ golf coach, girls’ athletic director Jessica Gatica recently announced.

Perry will remain the boys’ golf coach.

Perry’s son, Jeff Perry, will be Estancia’s new girls’ golf coach. Jeff Perry is finishing 11th year teaching at Estancia, where he is the activities director. Jeff Perry is a former Estancia High golfer who went on to compete for Chapman University.

Art Perry worked at Estancia for 40 years before retiring at the end of last year, Gatica said. Art Perry started the girls’ golf program at Estancia in 1998. He became the Eagles’ boys’ golf coach in 1988, Gatica said.

UCI in Alaska

The UC Irvine men’s basketball team will compete in the 2011 Great Alaska Shootout, Nov. 23-26.

Coach Russell Turner’s Anteaters will open against Murray State on Nov. 23. After taking Thanksgiving Day off, UCI would resume action Friday against either Southern Mississippi or Alaska Anchorage.

Alaska Anchorage is the host for the 34th annual tournament that also includes Central Michigan, Dartmouth, New Mexico State, and the University of San Francisco.

The Shootout is the longest-running regular-season college basketball tournament in the nation, taking place every Thanksgiving week in Anchorage since 1978.

UCI, then coached by Bill Mulligan, competed in the 1990 Shootout.

The ‘Eaters lost to UCLA, 134-101, in the opening game, then beat Texas Tech, 96-81, and lost to Siena, 119-108.

Kuntz joins AYSO

UC Irvine men’s soccer coach George Kuntz has joined the AYSO staff in the newly created position of Player Development Technical Advisor.

Kuntz, who will remain as the Anteaters’ head coach, will provide technical advice, direction and support to the AYSO National Coaching Advisory Commission in addition to other duties.

He has been heavily involved in AYSO events and clinics throughout his coaching career.

“I am excited to help develop players and coaches in AYSO at the national level,” Kuntz said in a statement. “AYSO is an organization that holds an important place in American soccer and has been instrumental in the development of the grassroots player.”

Kuntz, who begins his 17th season as UCI’s head coach in the fall, led the Anteaters to the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009.

His UCI teams won Big West Conference regular-season titles in 2008 and 2010, and Big West Tournament championships in 2008 and 2009.

The three-time Big West Coach of the Year was named NSCAA Far West Region Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008.
