CdM’s Haly is league’s MVP

Corona del Mar High senior middle blocker Spencer Haly was named the Pacific Coast League MVP after helping the boys’ volleyball team repeat as undefeated league champion.

The league crown was the first of four championships the 6-foot-7 Haly led CdM (32-4, 10-0 in league) to this season.

Haly, who was one of four Sea Kings earning first-team honors, played a vital role to the Sea Kings winning the CIF Southern Section Division II title, the CIF Southern California Regional Division II title and the ESPN RISE national title.

Haly, who is bound for Stanford, finished with 256 kills and a team-best 113 blocks. He is a repeat first-team selection.

Joining Haly on the first team were senior opposite Evan Dean, senior setter Nick Curci and senior libero Chip Zucker.

Dean, who is going to Pepperdine, recorded 193 kills and 32 blocks. He is a repeat first-team pick.

Curci finished with 459 assists, 78 digs and 17 service aces.

Members of the second team included CdM junior outside hitter Parker Brown and senior outside hitter Brennan Anderson.

Brown led the team with 353 kills and he contributed 136 digs, 36 blocks and 34 aces.

Anderson, who is bound for Ohio State, recorded 236 kills, 135 digs, 41 blocks and 29 aces.

Caldwell MVP again

Newport Harbor High senior outside hitter Cody Caldwell was named the Sunset League MVP for the second time in the last three seasons.

Caldwell, who is bound for Loyola Chicago University, produced an area-best 641 kills and 221 digs. He added 43 blocks and 32 service aces.

Caldwell led the Sailors (24-9, 10-0 in league) to their third undefeated league title in four seasons and the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs for the second straight season.

Joining Caldwell on the first team were senior outside hitter Rusty Sary, senior setter Ian Sequeira and sophomore middle blocker Kevin Rakestraw.

Sary finished with 374 kills, 140 digs, 42 blocks and 21 aces. Sary is going to Orange Coast College.

Sequeira, who is heading to UCLA, tallied an area-best 1,064 assists. He contributed 80 digs and 32 blocks.

Rakestraw had 155 kills, 71 blocks and 12 aces.

On the second team from Newport Harbor was junior Max Richley.

Kawaguchi league MVP

Sage Hill School sophomore Kent Kawaguchi earned the Academy League MVP award in boys’ volleyball.

Kawaguchi kept the Lightning (11-15, 7-3 in league) in contention for a league title late in the regular season before they finished in second place. He went on to record 38 assists, 17 digs, four kills and three services aces in Sage Hill’s CIF Southern Section Division IV second-round playoff match at Yucaipa.

Junior outside hitters Cole Kirby and Chris Zadra also made the first team.

Kirby recorded 209 kills, 101 digs, 13 service aces and 12 blocks.

Zadra averaged 14 kills in Sage Hill’s two playoff matches.

Making the second team were senior middle blocker Randall Mycorn and senior libero Kenji Gottner.

Pham earns honor

Estancia High sophomore libero Anthony Pham received second-team All-Orange Coast League honors in boys’ volleyball.

Pham helped the Eagles defeat cross-town rival Costa Mesa twice, which led to Estancia’s only wins in league.

Laguna Beach’s Robbie McKnight was named the Orange Coast League MVP.
