Duo with UCI ties in the mix

SAN FRANCISCO — Max Greil and Pete Fernandez, a former and current UCI golfer, respectively, are competing in the 100th annual California State Amateur Championship that began Monday at The Olympic Club.

Greil, who recently completed his senior season at UCI, and Fernandez, who will be a redshirt freshman in the fall, each opened with a score of one-over-par 72 on the Ocean course to sit in 30th place after the first round.

Stroke play continues Tuesday with Fernandez beginning his round at 9:10 a.m. and Greil 9:30 a.m. on the Lake course.

The low 32 players following Tuesday’s play will advance to match play that begins Wednesday.
