Salzman leads the way for Ocean View

The 2011 Little League District 62 All-Stars Tournament is about to go on hiatus for the Fourth of July weekend, but not until a few more games are played Thursday at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley and Marina Park in Huntington Beach.

On Tuesday, Huntington Valley and Ocean View continued their winning in Majors play, Ocean View and Costa Mesa National each posted their second tournament wins in 10/11 action, Huntington Valley and Robinwood rolled onward in the 9/10 division and Huntington Valley, Seaview, Westminster and Ocean View were still going strong in the Junior tournament.

All-Stars action continues with games in each division at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday, but the tournament takes a break Friday through Monday and resumes Tuesday.

Ocean View 6, Costa Mesa National 0: Ocean View started All-Star tournament play Saturday with a 6-0 shutout of Costa Mesa National. Braydon Salzman pitched a complete-game three-hitter that included 13 strikeouts and no walks. Nick Pratto went two for three with a double and three-run home run, Trevor Windisch had a solo home run and Christian Catano singled twice.

“I was very pleased with Salzman’s performance on the mound,” Ocean View Manager Jeff Pratto said. “He was in total command from the start and dictated the momentum of the game.

Ocean View 17 Seaview 0: Ocean View pounded out 17 hits, including nine doubles, Monday in a game called after four innings (mercy rule) at Mile Square Park. Key performances for Ocean View came from Matthew Blokdyk, who was three for three with four RBIs, Jack Pelc with two doubles, Ben McConnell and Brad Monroe, who both had two hits, and Andrew O’Brien had a hit in his only at bat. On the mound, Blokdyk, Nate Madole and Nick Welch combined to throw a no-hitter. The trio allowed just two base runners on a pair of walks.

Ocean View 7 Huntington Valley 4: Huntington Valley took a 3-1 lead in the second inning but Ocean View came back to win Saturday’s opener. Jack Pelc scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning for Ocean View, but Huntington Valley scored three times in the second inning to take its 3-1 lead. A two-run home run to center by Matthew Blokdyk knotted the score at 3 and Ocean View continued the momentum with a two-run double by Brad Vega. Pelc, Zeke Ziegler and Jake Volo also had key hits in the game for Ocean View.

“When the brackets came out, we knew we had a tough draw facing Huntington Valley in the first game,” Ocean View Manager Steven Blokdyk said. “Our boys have worked hard to prepare for this tournament and it showed tonight.”

Robinwood 8, Ocean View 0: Rocco Peppi recorded his second straight shutout of the tournament Tuesday as Robinwood remained undefeated. Peppi threw 65 pitches in six innings and allowed two hits and a walk. Ryan Holman hit a towering home run to center field and right fielder Colin Stanfield made a key play by throwing out a running at second base.

In a tournament opener Saturday at Mile Square Park, Peppi gave up three hits, Holman closed out the final inning and Andrew Sojka smashed a solo home run to help power Robinwood to a 15-0 mercy-rule win over Costa Mesa.

In Robinwood’s two tournament games, Sojka is four for five and Dylan Holt four for four with a double.
