Arcadia High captured the third annual Beach City Challenge prep football 7-on-7 passing competition at Marina High on Saturday.
Arcadia beat La Serna of Whittier in the final to win the event. Serra, which won last year's tournament, and Redondo Union, reached the semifinals.
The junior varsity competition was won by Pacifica on Friday.
Marina, which competed in pool play with La Serna earlier in the competition, lost to Valley View of Moreno Valley in the consolation final. The Vikings were driving for a potential go-ahead score, but the drive ended on an interception.
Marina lost to La Serna, Corona del Mar and Sweetwater (San Diego) in pool play. The Vikings scored afternoon victories over Ocean View and Los Amigos.
"We competed well and there were some outstanding teams in this tournament," Marina Coach George Pascoe said. "There was some really good competition."
Ocean View defeated Godinez but lost to Garden Grove and Temescal Canyon in pool play.
Brethren Christian was scheduled to participate in the passing event, but the Warriors didn't compete Saturday, Pascoe said.
Locals help South to victory
The South took an 17-0 first-half lead in on the North in Friday's Brea Lions Orange County Football Game, fell behind, 22-17, but rallied in the fourth quarter to score a 23-22 victory in the 52nd annual classic at Orange Coast College.
Zane Hudak (offensive line/defensive tackle) of Huntington Beach, Ryan Blackiston (defensive back) of Edison and Brandon Moss (offensive line) of Fountain Valley, played for the South, which won the game for the third consecutive year.
Fountain Valley closed out its summer session with the 22nd annual Fountain Valley Lineman Competition on Wednesday. The annual event had teams competing in bench press, power clean, truck push, hurdle relay, Ironman relay and ends with a tug-of-war event, Fountain Valley Coach John Shipp said.
The Barons last week competed at a lineman competition at Saddleback College and finished eighth among 21 teams. They began their summer schedule with the San Diego St. passing competition in June and also competed at the North County Passing Tournament in San Diego.
The Barons went 4-1 in an event hosted by Rancho Buena Vista and El Camino, their loss coming in the quarterfinals to Helix (San Diego), which went on to win the tournament.
"Last year, we had a very young group in respect to our skill positions," Shipp said. "Throughout summer camp, we have gotten better in that regard and this team is coming together. Our line is really coming together, as well. The kids have worked hard and it's important that we carry that hard work and success from the summer, to fall camp."
Shipp said that Fountain Valley will open camp for the 2011 season with two-a-day practices Aug. 8. The Barons launch their season Aug. 26 at Henderson, Nev., against Green Valley High.
