College Roundup: Calderon’s goal propels ‘Eaters in OT

UC Irvine 2, Gonzaga 1 (2 OT)

IRVINE — Freshman defender Victor Calderon scored the game-winner in the second overtime to propel the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Friday.

Calderon converted an assist from senior Miguel Ibarra in the 107th minute to break a 1-1 deadlock and help UCI improve to 2-0.

Ibarra scored in the 55th mintue to open the scoring. Freshman Cameron Iwasa was credited with an assist.

The Bulldogs scored in the 71st minute, making good on just one of their four shots. It was their only shot on goal.

UCI, ranked No . 14 by the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America, amassed 44 shots.

The Anteaters play host to Drake on Sunday at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Delaware

NEWARK, Del. — Sophomore outside hitter Aly Squires was the lone Anteater in double-figure kills with 18 to lead UC Irvine to a 25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 16-25, 15-9 win over the host Blue Hens on Friday at the Delaware Invitational.

The loss dropped Delaware to 1-3 on the season.

Squires notched her second double-double match of the season with 15 digs and libero Kristin Winkler topped all players with a season-high 24 digs. Alexandra Hauser and Shaina Olsen posted nine kills apiece and setter Mary Carls handed out 38 assists in the win for UCI (3-1).

Shannon Fleming led the Anteaters at the net, tying a career-high with five block assists.

UCI continues play in the tourney by taking on Northern Iowa at 7 a.m. PDT Saturday and then Florida State at 2 p.m.

Asics/Crown Plaza tournament

COSTAS MESA — Vanguard improved to 6-3 on the season with a pair of wins Friday at Vanguard.

The Lions posted a 25-11, 25-10, 25-12 victory against Kansas Wesleyan at the Asics/Crowne Plaza Labor Day Volleyball Festival.

Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, led Vanguard with 10 kills and Stevie Hurlbirt and KaUwila Lavea added nine and eight, respectively.

Kansas Wesleyan is 0-3.

In its first match of the day, Vanguard swept Concordia (New York), 25-13, 25-19, 25-15.

Lavea led the Lions with 12 kills and Kendall Haldi chipped in with seven kills. Alejandra Leja finished with 25 assists.
