COSTA MESA – The Estancia High girls’ volleyball team opened the season by losing the first two games against Segerstrom Tuesday.

But the Eagles used the energy they had attained from rigorous offseason training to rally for a 19-25, 16-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-13 nonleague win at home.

Lauren Peterson led Estancia with nine kills. Eileen Umansky also contributed to the big win, recording 19 digs.

“The girls played great,” Estancia Coach Paul Muñoz said. “This year they had to learn to work as a team. It’s really important that they work together. After they were down two games, I think they really learned to play with energy.”

Muñoz said the training also dealt with the mental preparation.

“That played a huge factor tonight,” he said. “They really pulled it together. I think in a match like that last year, they get swept, but this year they didn’t let down at all. They had a little bit more fun in the game. They stepped up. It was totally awesome.”

Estancia plays at Tustin Thursday.
