Briefs: Moon book signing coming

Wally Moon, who played in three All-Star games in 12 major league seasons, including seven with the Los Angeles Dodgers, will be signing his book “Moon Shots: Reflections on a Baseball Life” Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Newport Sports Museum at Fashion Island.

Moon, who played for the Dodgers from 1959 to 1965, was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1954 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Now 81, his book chronicles his baseball career, which included World Series titles in 1959, ’63 and ’65.

Triathlon stars

Newport Beach resident Ryan Pearson topped local finishers in the Pacific Coast Triathlon, held Sunday at Crystal Cove State Park.

Pearson, 32, finished the half-mile swim, 12-mile bike and three-mile run in one hour, 6 minutes, 10 seconds to place 14th overall. He was fourth in his division (men’s ages 30-34).

Other top local finishers included: Blake Foster, 24, Newport Beach (25th overall in 1:08:28, first men’s ages 20-24); Anthony Petros, 51, Newport Beach (36th overall in 1:10:21, fifth men’s ages 50-54); Mark Bucci, 32, Corona del Mar (38th overall in 1:10:25, seventh men’s 30-34); Michael Ditolla, 47, Newport Beach (43rd overall in 1:11:07, seventh men’s 45-49); Adam Zalewski, 39, Costa Mesa (49th overall in 1:11:49, third men’s 35-39); Robert Kinney, 58, Newport Beach (52nd overall in 1:11:51, second men’s 55-59); Jay Palchikoff, 56, Corona del Mar (55th overall in 1:11:56, third men’s 55-59); Keri Olson, 37 Newport Beach (88th overall in 1:16:09, first women’s 35-39); and Bill Kirchner, 65, Newport Coast (240th overall in 1:25:39, second men’s 65-69).

NHYC opens well

The Newport Harbor Yacht Club finished third, seventh and eighth in three races Tuesday and ranks sixth among 22 entries in the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup off the coast of Newport, R. I.

The Royal Canadian Yacht Club leads with seven total points (combined finishes of first, second and fourth).

The event continues through Saturday.
