OCC’s running game not enough

WILMINGTON — The Orange Coast College football team out-rushed Los Angeles Harbor, but just slightly, yet still lost, 34-28, Saturday.

The game did feature the top two running teams in the 37-school Southern California Football Assn.

The Pirates (1-2) rushed for 288 yards, while L.A. Harbor (3-0) had 281 yards rushing.

Domenic Betts led the way for OCC with 171 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Theron West led the Seahawks with 198 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

The Pirates trailed, 21-20, with 11 seconds left in the first half after Betts scored on a 20-yard reception from quarterback Alex Cappellini.

But L.A. Harbor increased its lead, 28-20, 13 seconds into the second half after David Niko took back an interception 37 yards for the touchdown.

Betts later ran 61 yards for a touchdown and Bill Chimphalee ran in the two-point conversion to tie the score, 28-28, with 12:54 left.

Dion Willis scored from 13 yards out with 10:06 left for the game-winning touchdown.
