NJB tryouts are set for Monday

Tryouts for the upcoming 2011-12 Laguna Beach Winter National Junior Basketball season are Monday at the Thurston Middle School gymnasium. Tryout times by division are: boys’ Division 3 (grades 3/4) and girls’ Division 3 (grades 3/4), 5-5:45 p.m.; girls’ Division 2 (grades 5/6) and girls’ Division 1 (grades 7/8), 6-6:45 p.m.; boys’ Division 2 (grades 5/6), boys’ 5th-grade All-Net and boys’ 6th-grade All-Net, 7-7:45 p.m.; boys’ Division 1 (grades 7/8) and boys’ 8th-grade All-Net, 8-8:45 p.m.

To be eligible, girls and boys must live within the Laguna Beach Unified School District boundaries but may attend private schools. Players are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to a tryout for check-in, register and jersey sizing.

Laguna Beach teams will compete against other NJB teams in Orange County. Games are schedule on weekends (primarily Saturdays) and the season runs December through February. Practices start in mid-October and are generally held once a week at the Thurston gym.

The cost for the season is $220 per player. Payment is due at the time of registration and tryout.

Boys & Girls hoops registration is open

In-house registration is under way for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach Boys’ Basketball League at the club’s main branch, 1085 Laguna Canyon Rd.

Player evaluations will take place between Oct. 3-14 and practices start Oct. 31. The season officially starts Dec. 6. All participants must be members of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach.

Club membership for youth ages 6-18 is $150 per year. The Boys & Girls Club Basketball League fee is $100 per player and includes a uniform. A $25 late fee will apply to registrations received after Sept. 30. Annual League sponsorship opportunities are available for $500 and include a personalized banner hung in the club’s gymnasium. Softball fundraiser is Oct. 16

The Laguna Beach High girls’ softball program will hold a fundraising dinner Oct. 16 at Lumberyard Restaurant (384 Forest Ave.) in Laguna Beach. The event is between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. Patrons who mention that they are there to support the softball program will have 20% of their bill donated to the program. Laguna players will be working the restaurant between 5 and 9 p.m. A silent auction will be held and prizes offered. Reservations are recommended. For reservation information, call (949) 715-3900.
