Oilers drop critical match

In a key battle that determined the a co-leader in the Sunset League boys’ water polo race, host Newport Harbor edged Huntington Beach, 11-9, on Oct. 19.

Noah Harrison scored four goals, Jovan Jeremic and Scott Schultz scored twice, John Lovat scored once and Brandon Lucia had seven saves for the Oilers, who are ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1. The Sailors, ranked second in Division 1, got a game-high six goals from junior Curtis Fink and 11 saves from goalie Koby Yokota.

The outcome left Huntington at 2-1 in league, a game behind co-leaders Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos, both 3-0.

The Oilers bounced back Friday to edge Dana Hills, 9-8, in nonleague play.

Edison picked up its first Sunset League victory Oct. 19 by handing Marina a 19-2 loss at the Newport Harbor pool. The Chargers led, 8-0, after one quarter and extended their lead to 15-0 at the half. Tony Morelli scored five goals, freshman Dane Estrella had four goals and Brent Bazzell, Kyle Crossen both scored three goals and Nate Sfreddo had nine saves for the Chargers, who improved to 1-2 in league.

Edison also played a pair of nonleague games last week. On Oct. 18, the Chargers traveled to Santa Margarita and scored a 10-7 win over the Eagles. Morelli scored three goals to lead the way and Justin Harrison and Troy Oates both scored twice. Sfreddo had six saves.

The Chargers capped their week Friday with a 14-2 victory against La Habra at the La Mirada Splash Aquatic Center. Harrison scored four times and Morelli and Oakes twice each. Sfreddo had nine saves.

“It was a great week for the Chargers,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said.

The Sunset League schedule wraps up Wednesday at Newport Harbor. Edison and Fountain Valley start the triple-header with a 5 p.m. game, followed at 6 p.m. by the Marina-Newport Harbor clash. Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos cap the night with a 7:10 p.m. game.

Girls’ Volleyball

In Sunset League girls’ volleyball action Tuesday, Edison — ranked second in CIF Division 1-AA — got by visiting Huntington Beach, 25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, and Marina won at home by sweeping Fountain Valley, 25-9, 25-18, 25-18. Cassie Strickland had 20 kills in Edison’s win and Natalie Kridel had 12 kills and nine digs in Marina’s triumph.
