College Roundup: Anteaters score big victory


UC Irvine 1, Cal Poly 0

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Miguel Ibarra scored in the 56th minute to help the No. 11-ranked Anteaters earn a Big West Conference Tournament berth Tuesday.

Christian Hernandez assisted on the goal. The Anteaters (14-5-1, 6-3-1 in conference) have the top spot in the Big West with 19 points. UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis have 15 points.

UCI played its final regular season game. UC Davis plays against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside. The Gauchos play against Cal Poly.


Orange Coast 5, Santa Ana 1

COSTA MESA — Sophomore striker Takuma Hori scored two goals and the Pirates upset defending Orange Empire Conference champion Santa Ana on Tuesday.

Orange Coast (11-6, 7-4 in conference) has won four straight matches, which includes a win against Irvine Valley, which finished runner-up to Santa Ana (11-4-3, 8-2-1) last year.

Chase Nugent and Antonio Gonzalez recorded one goal apiece for OCC, which plays at Cypress on Friday at 3 p.m.



Azusa Pacific 1, Vanguard 0

AZUSA — The Lions were shutout in the quarterfinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

Natalie Sun scored in overtime to lift the fourth-ranked Cougars (12-1-1) into the semifinals.

Gabriela Valles led Vanguard (12-5-1) with two shots on goal and goalie Lauren Terry made eight saves.


Orange Coast 1, Santa Ana 0

SANTA ANA — Jessica Parker scored a goal in the 25th minute in the Pirates' Orange Empire Conference match on Tuesday.

Orange Coast (11-3-4, 9-2-3 in conference) didn't allow a shot on goal during the match.



Cal State Fullerton def. UC Irvine

IRVINE — Shaina Olsen had 16 kills for the Anteaters who lost the Big West Conference match, 25-21, 15-25, 25-10, 28-26, Tuesday.

Aly Squires added 15 kills and Kristin Winkler led UCI (9-13, 3-7 in digs) with 29 digs.


Azusa Pacific def. Vanguard

COSTA MESA — Jamie Heenan led the No. 13-ranked Lions with 17 kills, as the No. 7 Cougars won the Golden State Athletic Conference match, 32-30, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19, Tuesday.

KaUwila Lavea had 12 kills and Jessica Neves added 10 kills for Vanguard (20-10, 9-6 in conference).

APU is 24-6, 11-4.



UC Santa Barbara 62, Vanguard 58

SANTA BARBARA — Trisha Goddard scored 19 points to lead the Lions in the exhibition game Tuesday.

Alison Drennan added 15 points and Paige Halberg scored 11 points for Vanguard.

Emilie Johnson led the Division I Gauchos with 15 points. The Lions led at halftime, 28-27.
