Tony Bartovich of Huntington Beach took first place in the Open Longboard division to lead a contingent of local athletes at the fifth event of the National Scholastic Surfing Assn.'s Southwest Conference Open Season. Bartovich posted an 8.84 total score to place ahead of runner-up Dane Petersen (6.30) of Trabuco Canyon at 54th Street in Newport Beach.
Other finishes by Huntington athletes included: Jack Boyes (third, Open Mens), Dylan Aragon (third, Open Juniors) and Jake Saenz (second, Airshow).
Purple Penguins take top spot
The Purple Penguins, and AYSO Region 55 Under-14 girls' team, finished its season in first with a record of 9-0-2. The team, led by head coach Anatole Falagan and assistant coach Mike Hammock, scored 29 goals and gave up only 4. The team will represent Region 55 in the Area K playoffs on Dec. 3-4.
The Purple Penguins are: Vanessa Cabellero, Alexa Dominguez, Daniela Falagan, Cheyanne Ferguson, Caroleena Hammock, Jenny Hudson, Stacy Imai, Justine Jackson, Quinn Kosareff, Emily Michels, Kyra Mindlin, Linsay Prante, Tania Urquidez and Sarah Wilkes.
Youth softball registration is open
Huntington Beach Girls Softball, an Amateur Softball Assn. recreational league, has opened registration for its spring 2012 season. Girls ages 5 to 14 are welcome to join the league. The 2012 season runs January through May, with practices and games held at Circle View Elementary School (6261 Hooker Dr., Huntington Beach). Fastpitch softball sign ups are available
South Huntington Beach Girls Fastpitch Softball is holding sign ups for its 2012 spring season. SHB is an Amateur Softball Assn. recreational softball league for girls ages 5 to 14. Online registration is available at http://www.shbgfs.org through Dec. 31.
