Share

For the first time in the 29-year history of its own tournament, the Ocean View girls’ soccer team advanced to the championship game of the Winter Classic. The Seahawks fell just short of winning the title as they were edged, 2-1, by Long Beach Millikan on Saturday.

Senior midfielder Aleanna Vargas scored and freshman goalie Malia Hayes registered 20 saves for the Seahawks, a Division 6 team, against the Division 2 Rams.

The Seahawks reserved a spot in the title match last Saturday by blanking Savanna, 4-0. Junior midfielder Danny Dapello scored two goals and Vargas and senior midfielder Kelley Dooley both scored once. Dooley, freshman defender Ariana Dzmura and sophomore midfielder Nicole Rodriguez, each had an assist.

The Seahawks, who won their first seven games of the season, are now 7-1. They are ranked second behind defending champion St. Margaret’s in this week’s Division 6 poll.

Edison pulled out to a 2-0 first-half lead on Yorba Linda last Saturday and went on to host Mustangs, 2-1, in nonleague action. Mackenzie Cerda had a goal and an assist, Audrey Minar scored once and Natalie McNeely posted four saves for the Chargers.
