Youth Roundup: Girls’ basketball team goes 2-0

The Laguna Beach girls’ fifth/sixth grade National Junior Basketball team continued its winning ways Saturday by running past Laguna Hills, 29-4, at Laguna Hills.

The Laguna Beach boys’ 5/6 team dropped a close game to Laguna Hills (UCLA), losing, 32-30, and also fell, 51-23, to the Laguna Beach No. 1 team.

The Laguna Beach girls took command from the start and won with ease. Isabel Mansour led the scoring with nine points. Sophia Lucas scored eight points and Evie Laptin and Quinn Winter added six and three points, respectively.

The Laguna Beach girls, now 2-0, host Rancho Santa Margarita on Saturday at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach.

In its 32-30 loss, the Laguna Beach boys’ squad missed a potential, score-tying shot in the closing seconds in a game that went to the wire. Frankie Cotinola led Laguna Beach in scoring with 10 points and teammate Drake Bell added six points.

Two hours later Saturday, Josh McManus and Miles Stripling both scored five points in a 51-23 loss to Laguna Beach No. 1.

Girls’ Soccer

The Lightning Bolts, a Laguna Beach AYSO girls’ Under-10 team coached by Lisa Clute, won its division title with an overall record of 10-1-2. The team represented Laguna Beach in the postseason AYSO Area 11L Tournament.

The Lightning Bolts are: Karmen Schmidt, Jade Howson, Hallie Clute, Julia Lee, Johanna Legault, Saejah Barrack, Elizabeth Cismoski, Annamarie McIntosh, Maija Shaw and Sophia Parker.
