Briefs: CdM girls win Dolphin Invitational

The Corona del Mar High junior varsity girls' water polo team captured the Dolphin Invitational on Thursday, beating El Toro, 11-3, in the championship game at Dana Hills High.

The two-day JV tournament featured eight teams, also including San Clemente, Laguna Hills, Dana Hills, Santiago of Corona, Capistrano Valley and Irvine.

Corona del Mar was led by goalies Erica Weed and Maddy Lanfried, as well as field players Caitlin Brandenberger, Eliza Britt, Shannon Frome, Kampbell Gritsch, Bobbi Hoose, Grace Morgan, Annie Mortimer, Ashley Quinn, Brianna Westrup and Natalie Wong.

Flowers earns honor

UC Irvine junior point guard Derick Flowers has been named the Big West Conference Player of the Week following his career-best performance in Thursday night's win over Cal State Northridge.

Flowers scored a career-high 21 points in leading the Anteaters over the Matadors, 71-62, in the Big West opener for both teams Thursday night in Northridge.

Flowers, whose previous career high was nine points, hit four of five three-pointers in the win and was six of 12 overall from the field. He added three assists and tied his career high with three rebounds.

After Northridge had cut a 22-point UCI lead to 55-52 in the second half, Flowers hit a three in the midst of a 7-0 run by the Anteaters and he hit three of four free throws in the final 52 seconds to help seal the victory.

Flowers, who did not start a game in his first two seasons with the Anteaters, has started five this season, including the past four. In those four games, he has 17 assists and has averaged 9.3 points.

UCI hosts Big West preseason favorite Long Beach State in a "Black & Blue" Rivalry game Monday night at 7 in the Bren Center.

Fever considers Peters

Newport Harbor High product Kasey Peters, a three-time NAIA All-American quarterback at Rocky Mountain College in Montana, is competing to earn a roster spot with the Tri-Cities Fever, an arena football team based in Kennewick, Wash.

Peters threw for more than 10,000 yards in three seasons at RMC, where he last played in 2010.

The former All-CIF Southern Section performer at Newport Harbor is in training camp with the team, which competes in the Indoor Football League.

The Fever opens its season Feb. 25.
