High School Roundup: CdM, Newport win twice in water polo tourney


Irvine Southern California Championships

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Diana Murphy scored seven goals as top-seeded Corona del Mar beat Warren, 17-6, in the second round of the tournament Thursday at CdM.

Pippa Saunders had four goals and Cassidy Papa added three for CdM (21-1), which beat Long Beach Cabrillo, 14-2, in the first round earlier Thursday behind four goals from Papa and three from Saunders. Senior goalie Alex Musselman made a combined 14 saves in the two games for the Sea Kings.

CdM plays Edison in a tournament quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Friday at CdM.


Irvine Southern California Championships

IRVINE — Senior Maddy McLaren scored three goals, helping second-seeded Newport Harbor top Carlsbad, 13-3, in the tournament second round Thursday night at Woollett Aquatics Center.

Presley Pender, Carolyn Smith and Carly Christian all added two goals. Goalie Cleo Harrington had 11 saves for the Sailors, who also beat Laguna Hills, 14-5, in the first round. McLaren scored five goals in that game, Christian scored four and Avery Peterson added three.

Newport Harbor (18-4) plays Dos Pueblos in a tournament quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Friday, back at Woollett.



Costa Mesa 45, Laguna Beach 17

COSTA MESA — Nancy Aguilar (six rebounds, four steals) and Molly Settles (13 rebounds, five steals) scored 13 points each for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League game Thursday.

Costa Mesa is 11-12, 5-3 league.


Los Alamitos 45, Newport Harbor 20

LOS ALAMITOS — Senior center Kasey Thompson finished with seven points, eight rebounds and one block in the Sailors' Sunset League game on Thursday.

Kirsten Rohan had four points and two rebounds for Newport Harbor (7-18, 0-8 in league).



Calvary Chapel 2, Estancia 0

SANTA ANA — Estancia dropped to 7-8-6, 2-2-4 in the Orange Coast League after the setback at Centennial Park Thursday.

Calvary Chapel improved to 3-0-5 in league.


Los Alamitos 2, Newport Harbor 1

LOS ALAMITOS — Senior Josie Jogwe scored for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Thursday.

Freshman Natalie Ward assisted for Newport Harbor (4-3-1 in league).
