High School Roundup: Newport wrestling trio advances

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High seniors Ben Nordstrom and Brandon Hayden, along with junior Larson Haley qualified for the CIF Southern Section Inland Division preliminaries Saturday at Huntington Beach High.

Nordstrom earned second place in the 160-pound division after losing, 6-0, to Max Kumashiro of Los Alamitos.

Hayden (182 pounds) and Harley (145) both finished third.

They will compete Feb. 17 at Roosevelt High in Corona.

They will vie to advance to the finals Feb. 18 also at Roosevelt.

CORONA DEL MAR — Sam Coffman had 11 points and four assists to lead the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Friday.

Seniors Melanie de Arakal and Amy Hoogenboom scored seven points each for CdM (10-14, 1-7 in league).

The Sea Kings play at Beckman Monday at 5:30 p.m.
