High School Roundup: Eagles advance

Estancia, La Serna 1 OT

WHITTIER — Senior Jesse Paz scored the golden goal in the 10th minute of the first overtime to lift the Eagles to the CIF Southern Section Division 4 first-round win Thursday.

Sophomore Abraham Cortez assisted on the goal. Estancia (12-4-5) scored first in the 25th minute, when Wesley Pena found the back of the net. But La Serna (13-7-4) tied it up with five minutes left in regulation.

Eagles Coach Robert Castellano said goalkeeper Enrique Salazar, who was brought up from the junior varsity team, stepped up for Estancia.

Salazar, a field player for the JV team, had six saves. He filled in for junior Danny Guerrero, who dislocated his left arm in the first five minutes of a win over Costa Mesa last week.

Estancia, which finished second in the Orange Coast League, will play host to No. 2-seeded Artesia (21-1-1) in the second round Tuesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Beaumont 4, Sage Hill 0

CHERRY VALLEY — The Lightning allowed two goals in each half and lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs Thursday.

Jack Percival did not play much in the second half for Sage Hill (13-7-0) because of a quad injury. Sophomore Kavi Sakraney had a broken nose that was operated on Monday. He did not start but played most the second half. Freshman Nikolai Sadeghi suffered a concussion last Thursday and did not play in the playoff game.

Eric Cheng senior stood out for Sage Hill, which finished second in the Academy League.

He moved up from fullback to forward to try to inject some offense.

The Cougars, the second-place team in the Mountain Pass League, improved to 16-7-0.
