College Roundup: UCI sweeps Long Beach State

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Long Beach State

IRVINE — Junior outside hitter Kevin Tillie finished with a match-high 16 kills, a career-high eight digs and four blocks assists to lead the fourth-ranked Anteaters to a 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation sweep of ninth-ranked Long Beach State on Friday.

Outside hitter Jeremy Dejno recorded 10 kills and two aces for UCI (12-3, 8-3 in MPSF).

Middle blocker Scott Kevorken had six kills. Middle blocker Dan McDonnell set a career high for total blocks with seven and added five kills.

Setter Chris Austin had 37 set assists, six digs and four total blocks.

Jim Baughman led Long Beach State (7-7, 3-6) with 12 kills.

UCI next plays at Pacific on March 2.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 13, Southwestern 1

COSTA MESA — Sophomore right-handed starter Keegan Yuhl allowed one unearned run in six innings on Friday as the Pirates improved to 13-0-1.

Chris Carlson went four for five with four runs batted in for OCC (13-0-1).

Boog Powell went three for tree with three runs batted in and he scored three runs.

The Pirates play host to College of the Canyons on Saturday at noon.

Vanguard 3, Patten 1

Vanguard 2, Patten 0

COSTA MESA — Junior Adriana Venezia went a combined four for six in the Lions’ nonconference doubleheader on Friday.

In the first game, Rachel Stalford threw seven innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out four to improve to 2-1.

Shelby Ross (2-2) recorded a complete-game shutout in the second game. She struck out five and gave up two hits.

The Lions improved to 8-6.

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

MPSF Championships

SEATTLE, Wash. — The UC Irvine women’s indoor track team opened competition Friday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.

Senior Amber Middleton just missed qualifying for the final of the 60-meter hurdles as her time of 8.57 was ninth-fastest in the preliminaries with the top eight advancing to Saturday’s final. Kelly Collins recorded a time of 8.94 in her preliminary heat of the 60 hurdles.

The meet concludes Saturday with the first event at 11 a.m.
