College Roundup: Folker steps up for UCI

IRVINE — Anteaters junior Adam Folker had seven of his career-high 28 points in overtime to propel the hosts in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

UCI outscored the Matadors, 11-2, in overtime to improve to 11-17, 6-8 in conference.

Sophomore Chris McNealy had a career-high 21 points, before fouling out with 2:17 left in regulation, and freshman Will Davis had a school-record eight blocked shots for UCI, which played its final home game of the season.

Folker, who was 11 of 14 from the field and had nine rebounds, followed his own miss with a layup with four second left to force overtime.

Mike WIlder had 11 points and 11 rebounds for UCI, which blocked 13 shots and shot 55.6% from the field (35 for 63).

The Matadors fell to 7-20, 3-12.

BASEBALL

Canyons 4, Orange Coast 1

COSTA MESA — For the second straight season, the Pirates saw their 14-game unbeaten streak to start the season end at the hands of the Cougars in the nonconference game Saturday at OCC.

OCC freshman center fielder Boog Powell managed the only two hits for the Pirates (13-1-1), who scored their lone run in the first.

Canyons took the lead on a two-run home run by Kevin Lenik in the sixth, then added single runs in the seventh and eighth to improve to 6-3-1.

Last season, OCC opened 14-0 before losing at Canyons.

OCC starter Eric Salcido took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings.

OCC opens Orange Empire Conference play on Thursday at home against Cypress at 2 p.m.
