High School Roundup: Cochran stands out at Irvine invite

IRVINE — Newport Harbor senior Ethan Cochran, bound for Cal, won the discus event with a personal record 203 feet, 9 inches and was named Field Athlete of the Meet Saturday at Irvine High.

Marty Taylor finished second in the shot put (52, 9 1/2) for the Sailors, whileJavier Venegas was third in the discus (162-3).

Fritz Howser was fourth in the pole vault (14-0) and Titus Hasson was seventh in the 100 meters (11.51)

Hasson, Dane Palanjian, Tala Teaupa, Cameron Cuevas was seventh in the 4x100 realy (44.13).

Jake Barber was fourth in his heat in the 1,600 (4:27.01).

IRVINE — Junior Paige Tennison finished second in the 3,200 meters race Saturday at Irvine High.

She finished fifth in the 1,600.

Best of the West Tournament

SAN DIEGO — Corona del Mar went 0-3 in the Gold Division Saturday.

The Sea Kings (3-3) lost to Oak Park (23-25, 22-25), Esperanza (14-25, 24-26) and Santa Barbara (25-18, 18-25, 13-15).

Parker Brown totaled 27 kills in the three matches.

CdM will play against Edison Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at Orange Coast College.

SAN DIEGO — Newport Harbor finished second in the Silver Division after losing to Thousand Oaks in the final, 20-25, 21-25, Saturday.

The Sailors (5-3) beat Bellarmine Prep (25-18, 25-20) and La Costa Canyon (21-25, 25-20, 15-13).

Clay Carr had 23 kills in the three matches, while Kevin Rakestraw had 21 kills. Max Richley had 34 digs in the three matches.

Peirce Ward had five kills against Thousand Oaks and Chris Sheppard had nine kills against La Costa Canyon.
