High School Roundup: Cochran throws discus 207-5 (No. 1 in nation)

Huntington Beach 78, Newport Harbor 58

NEWPORT BEACH — Sailors senior Ethan Cochran improved on his nation-leading discus mark, winning the event with a throw of 207 feet, 5 inches at the Sunset League meet Thursday.

Cochran, bound for UC Berkeley, also won the shot put with a personal-best 61-9.

Steve Michaelsen (second in shot put, 56-7; second in discus, 182-3), Marty Taylor (third in shot put, 55-10; fourth in discus, 160-7) and Javier Venegas (fourth in shot put, 55-4; third in discus, 172-10) also stood out for Newport Harbor.

The quartet will compete in the top flight for the shot put Saturday night at the Arcadia Invitational. Cochran and Michaelsen are both in the top flight for the discus at the Arcadia invite.

The Sailors’ Jake Barber won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 38.1 seconds against the Oilers. He will compete in the 3,200 Friday night at the Arcadia Invitational.

Rory Fleming won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 45.2 for the Sailors, while Fritz Howser won the pole vault with a 14-1 clearance.

Howser will compete at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Woodbridge 69, Corona del Mar 58

IRVINE — Nick McGuinness won three events and Thomas Testini won two for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

McGuinness won the 110-meter hurdles (15.9), 300 hurdles (42.2) and high jump (6-4). Testini won the 100 (11.1) and 200 (22.6). Kyle Iverson won the 400 (51.9).

Iverson, along with Blake Myers, Ryan Rodrigues and Tanner Love will compete in the 4x800 relay at the Arcadia Invitational Friday night. Also at the Arcadia Invitational, Troy Bolus will compete in the long jump Saturday morning and John Swigert, Iverson, Rodrigues and Myers will compete in the distance medley relay Saturday night.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar 45, Woodbridge 42

IRVINE — Karléh Wilson won two events to help the Sea Kings win the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Wilson won the shot put (39-2 1/2) and discus (120-11) events. Kristen Rivera won the 800 meters in 2:19.1 and Claire Keddington won the long jump (15-7 1/2) for CdM.

Rivera and Miranda Stiver will compete in the 800 at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday afternoon, when Wilson will compete in the shot put.

Ashlee Powers will compete in the 3,200 at the Arcadia Invitational Friday night.

Huntington Beach 91, Newport Harbor 45

NEWPORT BEACH — Leah Van Dyke and Natalie Ward were double winners for the Sailors in the Sunset League meet Thursday.

Van Dyke won the 1,600 meters in 5:37.4 and the 3,200 in 12:10.3.

Ward won the 100 hurdles in 17 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 48.8. Katelyn Mead won the 800 in 2:32.4 and was second in the 3,200 in 12:17.5.

Peri Howser will compete in the pole vault at the Arcadia Invitational Friday night. Paige Tennison was slated to compete in the distance events but pulled out because of illness.

BASEBALL

Estancia 4, Calvary Chapel 3

COSTA MESA — Estancia’s Andres Hernandez pitched a complete game with no walks and two strikeouts to deal Calvary its first loss of the season Thursday.

Hernandez improved to 3-1 after giving up six hits and two earned runs. Ben Beck was two for two with one run batted in and one run scored, while Tyler Rios was one for three with a double and a run for Estancia (10-3, 5-2 in the Orange Coast League). Brodie Pearce had an RBI and a double. Estancia completed a triple play in the fifth inning. Levi Stillman caught a line drive at second base, threw back to first baseman Jason Rodriguez and Rodriguez then threw to second base where Rios was standing on the bag to finish off the triple play.

Calvary Chapel is 11-1, 6-1.

Laguna Beach 10, Costa Mesa 9

LAGUNA BEACH — The Mustangs nearly rallied from a 9-0 deficit in the Orange Coast League game Thursday.

Costa Mesa scored seven runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the score, 9-9, but gave up a run in the seventh.

Trace Curet went two for four with four runs batted in and a run scored. Marcus Hayes went two for four with two runs and an RBI. Austin McArdle was two for four with one RBI and a run and Kage Kistler was two for three with two runs and one RBI.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 16, Northwood 2

CORONA DEL MAR — For the second straight day, junior Alec Adamson and sophomore Carson Williams each downed one of the county’s top singles players in the Pacific Coast League match Thursday.

Adamson and Williams each beat Northwood’s Julian Ruffin, ranked No. 32 in the USTA 18s and bound for UC Riverside. Adamson beat him, 6-1, and Williams ended the match with a 6-4 victory over Ruffin.

CdM is ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 coaches’ poll; Northwood is No. 7.

Juniors Paul Kacik and Andrew Nguyen swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for CdM (12-2, 4-1 in league). The Sea Kings play host to Sage Hill on April 14 at noon.

Newport Harbor 11, Edison 7

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sailors won all nine sets in singles in the Sunset League match Thursday.

No. 1 Reese Stalder, No. 2 Christian Lee and No. 3 Chase Rados each swept in singles for Newport Harbor (10-5, 4-2 in league).
