UC Irvine sophomore attacker Danielle Warde was named Big West Conference Player of the Week in women’s water polo on Thursday.

Warde took control on offense and defense in weekend wins over UC Davis and Pacific to clinch at least a share of the conference regular-season crown.

She had five goals in seven shots in the two matches and added one assist against UC Davis, a 10-4 victory on Saturday.

Warde was a much larger presence on the defensive end. In addition to one field block, she made four steals against the Aggies and five more against the Tigers (a 14-2 win on Sunday). She leads the team with 60 steals, 11 more than any one player had in 2011. Warde also filled in and won all eight sprints for the No. 6-ranked Anteaters (21-5, 4-0 in conference).

UCI plays host to No. 2-ranked UCLA on Saturday at 1 p.m.
