High School Roundup: Mesa rallies to win

COSTA MESA — Costa Mesa High boys’ volleyball coach Jeff Weihert said the Mustangs’ big win Tuesday was the type of victory that can give them a boost and improve their season.

Costa Mesa rallied for an Orange Coast League win over rival Estancia at the Mustangs’ gym.

Noah JeyaRajah had 27 kills and Sean Comer had 26 kills to lead Costa Mesa to a 27-25, 16-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-10 victory.

Andrew Wright had 42 assists and Wyatt Ferris had 10 blocks for the Mustangs (5-5, 2-2 in league).

“The guys did really well,” Weihert said. “We played behind pretty much the whole time. But in some of the games, the last 10 points we just pulled it off. If these guys can stick together we will go pretty far. They showed poise and discipline today. We were injured before, but we got healthy guys back. I think we’re going to make a strong push.”

Dylan Gaitan led Estancia (3-10, 1-4 in league) with 12 kills.

BASEBALL

Estancia 2, Laguna Beach 1

COSTA MESA — Junior Ben Beck singled in the game-winning run for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh inning in an Orange Coast League game on Tuesday.

Steven Macias improved to 5-2 after throwing a complete game. He gave up one earned run and struck out five, while allowing eight hits and one walk.

Macias went three for three with a triple and a run batted in. Beck went two for four.

The Eagles (11-6, 6-2 in league) remained in second place in league, one game behind Calvary Chapel.

Estancia plays at Laguna Beach on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Corona del Mar 9, Northwood 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Andrew McCormack was three for four and also earned the win for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League game at CdM.

McCormack pitched six innings for CdM (12-6, 5-3 in league), allowing a run on five hits. He is now 6-1.

Brett Thompson hit a two-run home run for the Sea Kings, Brent Lawson was two for four with two runs batted in and Hunter Heckendorn was two for two with two doubles and an RBI.

CdM, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 3, plays at Northwood on Friday.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 8, St. Margaret’s 5

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Hunter Molnar finished with two goals and one assist in the Sea Kings’ nonleague match on Tuesday, helping CdM, ranked No. 6 in the state by laxpower.com, improve to 15-0.

Taylor Epps won 11 of 18 faceoffs and goalie Michael Ortlieb made 10 saves.

Michael Keasey and Jack Ortlieb each added two goals for CdM, which plays Woodbridge in a Pacific Coast League game at Alton Athletic Park in Irvine on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor def. Edison

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior middle blocker Kevin Rakestraw recorded 12 kills in the Sailors’ 30-28, 25-19, 25-15 Sunset League sweep on Tuesday.

Peirce Ward had nine kills for Newport Harbor (18-7, 5-1 in league), ranked No. 10 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll.

Nic Sargeant finished with 11 digs and Max Richley had 10 digs

The Sailors play host to Marina on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

COROAN DEL MAR — Parker Brown had 10 kills to help the Sea Kings to a 25-16, 25-20, 25-23 Pacific Coast League win Tuesday.

James Christian, Joey Martino and Jack Reed had seven kills each, Remy Lamons and Thomas Hunter had six kills each and Joe Ctrvtlik had 37 assists for CdM (17-5, 6-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 2.

The Sea Kings play host to Northwood on Friday.

Sage Hill def. St. Margaret’s

NEWPORT COAST — Junior setter Kent Kawaguchi collected 46 assists, eight kills, three blocks and three service aces in the Lightning’s 25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18 Academy League win on Tuesday.

The Lightning (16-10, 5-1 in league) share first place in league with Crean Lutheran.

Chris Zadra finished with 20 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Jack Burgi had 17 kills and seven digs.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 poll, plays host to No. 6 Crean Lutheran on Thursday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 14, Irvine 4

IRVINE— CdM sophomore Carson Williams improved to 42-6 on the season with a singles sweep in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League match.

Williams won his sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-1, including a 6-1 victory over Irvine’s Kenny Gea. Alec Adamson also beat Gea for CdM (14-2, 5-1 in league).

In doubles, freshman Henry Gordon teamed up with senior Alex Murray for two 6-1 set wins before being subbed out.

CdM, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays host to Beckman on Wednesday.

Newport Harbor 13, Marina 5

NEWPORT BEACH — Freshman Reese Stalder, junior Christian Lee and senior Troy Arnold all swept in singles for the Sailors in their Sunset League match Tuesday.

Seniors Matthew Searcy and Logan Friend won two of three sets at No. 1 doubles for Newport Harbor (10-5, 5-2 in league), which plays at first-place Los Alamitos on Thursday.

The Sailors play host to Huntington Beach on April 24 and can clinch a CIF playoff berth with a win, Coach Kristen Case said. Newport Harbor missed the playoffs last year.

COSTA MESA — Senior Michael Chantos swept at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday at Costa Mesa High.

The Mustangs’ doubles teams of Tam Le and Max Nguyen, Thuan Trong and Michael Nguyen, as well as Tony Nguyen and Kevin Nguyen, all swept.

Costa Mesa (3-7, 3-3 in league) plays at rival Estancia in a key league match Friday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Estancia 188, Laguna Beach 206

ALISO VIEJO — Estancia senior Jake Knapp shot two-under par 33 in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday.

Jake Stone (37), Courtland Lee (38), Davin Ortiz (39) and Aaron Wood (41) also scored for Estancia (12-4, 6-0 in league).

The Eagles also beat Lakewood, 193-215, in a nonleague match Monday. Lee was the medalist with a one-under 35. Coach Art Perry said it was the first time in three years that the UCLA-bound Knapp, who shot 39, had been bested in a match.

Estancia plays Calvary Chapel at Mile Square Park on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Corona del Mar 177, Irvine 212

IRVINE — John Davenport was the medalist for the Sea Kings after firing a two-under-par 34 in the Pacific Coast League match Tuesday at Oak Creek Golf Course.

Chase Wheatley and Hale Furey both shot 35, Brian Mull carded a 36 and Mike Moorhead shot a 37 for CdM (17-0, 7-0 in league).

Newport Harbor 205, Edison 216

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors’ Brad Tapfer and Danny Willett were medalists after shooting four-over-par 40 in the Sunset League match at Big Canyon Country Club Tuesday.

Tapfer and Willett shared medalist honors with Edison’s Cameron Bauer.

Mason Moody (41), Tyler Tashiro (41) and Landon Knight (43) also scored for Newport Harbor (10-6, 3-2 in league).

Estancia 20, Saddleback 2 (five innings)

ESTANCIA — Bryanna Vernon went four for five to highlight the Eagles’ 19-hit attack in the Orange Coast League game Tuesday.

Rachelle Reynolds (three for three), Chloe Davis (three for five), Kelly Hinkle (two for five), Gianna Guyot (two for four), Kayla Hayes (two for four) also contributed for Estancia (6-14, 1-2 in league).

The Eagles play host to Calvary Chapel on Friday.
