Doug Oliver, who has spent time on the men's and women's basketball coaching staffs at UC Irvine, has expressed interest in the school's women's basketball coaching vacancy, Darrin Nelson, a senior associate athletic director in charge of the search for a new coach, said Tuesday.
Oliver was a first-year assistant for then-coach Molly Goodenbour during the 2011-12 season. Goodenbour was fired on March 21 after four seasons in which the Anteaters went 44-76.
Oliver spent two seasons from 2009 to 2011 on the UCI men's staff, working first with then-coach Pat Douglass, then with then-first-year head man Russell Turner.
He was the men's basketball head coach at Idaho State from 1998 to 2006, after a stint from 1986 to 1998 as a men's assistant at Stanford.
He came to UCI as a special assistant to Athletic Director Mike Izzi, who worked at Stanford prior to landing the Anteaters' AD job.
Nelson, who said college coaching experience will be a priority in choosing the new coach, said he and a selection committee consisting of between five and 10 people, would begin interviewing candidates as soon as this week. Nelson said he has received between 50 and 60 resumes from prospective candidates.
