Locals are set to return to diamond

Spring break found a few local prep baseball teams in action, but a few others had their playing plans washed away.

Marina finished up a two-game Sunset League series with Los Alamitos and dropped both games to the Griffins, and Ocean View closed out its run at the Hard Nine National Classic tournament.

Fountain Valley was to take on Beckman in the final of the Beach Pit Classic, but the game had to be rescheduled because of rain, and Brethren Christian had a nonleague game with Gabrielino called off.

Both Edison and Huntington Beach headed north for the San Luis Obispo Tournament, but the recent storm wiped out the tournament. Teams were scheduled to play league games Wednesday, but scores weren’t available at press time.

Below is a team-by-team recap of the previous week:

Marina: The Vikings dropped their fifth one-run game of the season and slipped to 4-3 in Sunset League play after falling, 4-3, to visiting Los Alamitos.

Junior Jackson Westermeyer was throwing a strong game but was injured in the fifth inning when a line drive went off his leg. The Marina bullpen then gave up three runs to the Griffins. The Vikings loaded the bases in the bottom of the seven but could not bring in any runs. Landon Marshall had a hit, walked twice and drove in two runs and Jake Arledge, Austin Sojka and Keegan Reeser scored for the Vikings.

The Vikings host Newport Harbor at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Ocean View: The Seahawks completed play last week at the Hard Nine National Classic and split games with Chaminade and Sunrise Mountain (Arizona).

Ocean View (7-11built a big lead on Chaminade on April 11, saw that lead disappear, then scored in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-6 victory. Timmy Robinson went two for four with a home run and two runs batted in and John Giacone went two for three with a pair of doubles, including the game-winner that scored Colton Johnson.

“That was a big win for us,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said. “We needed to know that we could compete with anybody in this tournament, and we showed we could do that.”

Ocean View rallied late but fell, 3-2, to Sunrise Mountain in their tournament finale April 12.

Robinson, who went six for 14 with two home runs and a double was named to the all-tournament team.

Ocean View is home to Orange for a 3 p.m. league game Friday.

Brethren Christian: The Warriors traveled Tuesday for an Academy League game at Oxford Academy. The teams meet again at 3 p.m. Friday at Brethren Christian.

Edison: The Chargers host Fountain Valley in a 3:15 p.m. Sunset League clash Friday.

Fountain Valley: The Barons have a busy schedule this weekend. On Friday, they play a 3:15 p.m. Sunset League game at Edison. At 11 a.m. Saturday, they host Beckman in the title game of the Beach Pit Tournament.

“We are having an outstanding year in nonleague, but have been very frustrated in the Sunset League where we have lost four one-run games in the last inning,” said Barons Coach Ron LaRuffa whose team entered the week 9-1 in nonleague play and 11-6 overall.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers have a 3:15 p.m. Sunset League game Wednesday at Edison.
