Vanguard splits conference doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Host Vanguard University won the first game, but dropped the second to get a Golden State Athletic Conference split on Friday.

Andrew Young hit a walk-off home run in the 11th inning to key a 3-2 win in Game 1. Young went three for four and scored twice for the winners.

Gabe Garcia allowed just four hits in 10 innings, but Tucker Woods earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief to improve to 5-2.

Westmont scored three in the eighth inning of Game 2, which was scheduled for seven innings, to collect a 6-3 win.

Young had one hit and drove in two runs for the Lions (23-19, 13-17 in conference).

Vanguard’s Adonis Tountas was four for six combined in the two games.

Westmont is 20-25-1, 11-19.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Cal State Northridge 1

INDIAN WELLS — Kristina Smith, Courtney Byron and Franziska Goettsching won in singles and doubles to help the Anteaters win the fist-round match of the Big West Conference Tournament on Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Smith, Byron and Goettsching earned straight-set singles wins and helped the No. 3-seeded ‘Eaters earn the doubles point against the No. 6-seeded Matadors.

UCI (15-7) meets No. 2-seeded UC Davis on Saturday at 8 a.m. The final is scheduled Sunday at 9 a.m.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, UC Riverside 0

INDIAN WELLS — Ryan Cheung and Shuhei Shibahara won in singles and doubles as the Anteaters dominated in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament on Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Cheung won 12 of 13 games at No. 6 singles, then teamed with Jon Kazarian to post an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles to help the No. 3-seeded Anteaters (7-16) advance.

UCI meets No. 2-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 11 a.m.
