High School Roundup: CdM sweeps past Woodbridge

CORONA DEL MAR — Junior opposite James Christian finished with eight kills as the Sea Kings got closer to repeating as undefeated Pacific Coast League champions with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 victory Friday.

Joey Martino added five kills for CdM (20-6, 9-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll.

The Sea Kings close out league play at home against University Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 9, Irvine 0

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Billy Macdonald threw a shutout in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League game Friday.

Macdonald (3-4) threw his third complete game of the season.

Max Stone went three for four with two doubles and four runs batted in for CdM (13-8, 6-5 in league).

Cort Hastings went two for two with a run batted in and a walk.

Estancia 4, Godinez 3 (eight innings)

COSTA MESA — Brodie Pearce drew a walk to drive in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in an Orange Coast League game Friday.

Estancia (13-8, 8-3 in league) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Brody Henscheid hit a triple in the bottom of the seventh to score two runs. Ben Beck then singled Henscheid home to tie it up, 3-3.

Henscheid (4-2) got the win in relief, pitching two hittless and scoreless innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

Andres Hernandez pitched six innings. He struck out five, allowing two earned runs and seven hits. Jackson Letterman went three for four for Estancia, which plays host to Saddleback Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Los Alamitos 11, Newport Harbor 5

NEWPORT BEACH — The Griffins (14-4, 5-1 in league, No. 5 ranking laxpower.com CIF southern section) won the Sunset League title outright by beating the Sailors (9-8, 3-3 in league, #20 rank) on Saturday afternoon.

Newport finished third in the league.

Riley Robinson led the Sailors with three goals. Ritter Hagadorn scored a goal and provided an assist. Brian Team also scored, while Kole Escher, Riley Peterson, and Matt Porteous all provided assists.

Defensively, the Sailors were led by Jack Murrel (five takeaways, eight groundballs), Andrew Wilson (three knockdowns, one takeaway, two groundballs) and John Connelly (two takeaways, three groundballs).

Zac Vayda made nine saves in goal, had four takeaways and one groundball.

Despite the loss, the Sailors qualified for the playoffs with the No. 12 seed and play at No. 5 seeded St. Margaret’s Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
