College Roundup: OCC women’s swim team wins state title

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

State championships

LOS ANGELES — Freshman Mackenzie Bailie was the lone individual event winner for Orange Coast College, but the Pirates did enough to claim their third straight title at the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Championships completed Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Bailie won the 50-yard butterfly in 25.28 seconds. She was second in the 50 freestyle (23.89) and was third in the 100 fly (57.64).

OCC’s Alyssa Schrader was second in the 100 fly (57.58), third in the 200 IM (2:10.43) and fourth in the 400 individual medley in 59.84.

Megan Barnett was fourth in the 500 free (5:12.84) and Nicole Buck was fifth in the 1,650 free (18:07.56).

Madison Seaberry was fifth in the 1,650 free (18:07.55).

OCC was second in the 200 free relay (1:37.7), second in the 200 medley relay (1:48.02), third in two other relays and fourth in another.

The Pirates totaled 431.5 points, three more than Diablo Valley.

OCC’s Anthony Iacopetti was named Women’s State Coach of the Year.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 6, San Diego State 2

SAN DIEGO — Senior center fielder Christian Ramirez went four for five with two runs batted in to pace the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Freshman designated hitter Connor Spencer drove in two runs as UCI had at least hit from all nine starters.

Starter Mark Trentacosta allowed three hits and one run while striking out six in six innings to earn his first win as an Anteater.

UCI (24-17) has now won four straight heading into a three-game Big West Conference series against visiting UC Santa Barbara, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The Aztecs fell to 20-26.

MEN’S SWIMMING

State championships

LOS ANGELES — Orange Coast College freshman Michael Kim won the 400 individual medley and was third in the 200 backstroke and the 200 butterfly to pace the Pirates to a third-place showing in the team standings at the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Championships completed Saturday at East Los Angeles College.

Kim topped the field in the 400 IM in 4 minutes, 02.86 seconds. He went 1:51.96 in the 200 back and 1:52.92 in the 200 fly.

OCC’s Avelino Enriquez finished second in the 200 back (1:50.67), was third in the 200 IM (1:54.63), and was fifth in the 100 back (51.23).

Ashkaun Hami finished second in the 100 fly (49.73).

The Pirates were second in the 400 medley relay and third in the 200 medley relay on their way to 283 points.

Santa Rosa had 602 and Palomar posted 408.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Orange Empire Conference Championships

MISSION VIEJO — Orange Coast College sophomore Grade Adams-Handy won the 5,000 meters, the 10,000 and the 3,000 steeplechase to help the Pirates finish second as a team in the meet completed Saturday at Saddleback College.

Adams-Handy finished the 5,000 in 18 minutes, 19.27 seconds. her time in the 10,000 was 29:08.75 and she topped the steeplechase field in 11:23.47.

OCC’s Megan Foley won the 800 in 2:17.22) and the 1,500 in 4:42.14, while the Pirates’ Geneva Alvarez won the 400 hurdles in 1:04.27.

Analicia Silva and Carmille Garcia were second and third, respectively, in both the 5,000 and 10,000, while Silva was third in the 1,500 as well.

Garcia was fourth in the 1,500.

Nikki Puerner was fourth in the 100 in 12.71 and fifth in the 200 in 25.91 for OCC.

Jessica Aguilera was third in the javelin (101 feet, 0 inches), and fifth in the heptathlon (669 points).

MEN’S GOLF

Big West Conference Championship

LA QUINTA — UC Irvine freshman Pete Fernandez and sophomore Allen Jun both finished ninth and the Anteaters finished sixth at the 54-hole event that concluded Tuesday at the La Quinta Mountain Course.

Fernandez finished one-under-par 215 with the benefit of five birdies on Tuesday, when he shot two-under 70.

Jun shot one-under on Tuesday with five birdies.

Junior Michael Yang (217) was 14th, while freshman Ryan Knapp, an Estancia High product, was 23rd with a three-round total of 221.

Junior Mickey Chan finsihed 39th at 230.

UCI’s team score of 868 was 10 strokes off the pace of victorious UC Davis.

Golden State Athletic Conference Championships

AZUSA — Vanguard University sophomore Kapree Nelson defended her title in the 400 meters with a winning time of 55.78 seconds on Saturday at Azusa Pacific.

Nelson was also second in the 200 (25.39), while junior Kimberly Kent collected the Lions’ other individual title by running 37 minutes, 35.45 seconds in the women’s 10,000.

Freshman Joi Goynes (12.35 in the 100), junior Megan Williams (4:42.81 in the 1,500), and senior Chelsea Van Cott (11:30.73 in the 3,000 steeplechase) earned third-place finishes for the Lions. The top three in each event were named All-GSAC.

Van Cott was fifth in the 5,000 in 18:43.54, while freshman Marline Estell was fourth in the 800 (2:16.82).

Vanguard finished sixth among eight scoring teams.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Orange Empire Conference championships

MISSION VIEJO — Patrtick Douglass won the 5,000 meters and Barron Maizland won the 3,000 steeplechase, while Andrew Cruikshank won the decathlon to pace Orange Coast College to a second-place team finish in the meet completed Saturday at Saddleback College.

Hugo Gutierrez was second in the 5,000 in 3:58.93 and Zach Ellis was second in the steeplechase (9:40.84) for the Pirates.

Maizland was third in the 5,000 in 15:38.22 and Douglas was third in the 1,500 in 3:59.15 and Ellis was third in the 10,000 in 31.13.43. Jace Hinesly was third in the steeplechase in 9:51.26.

Winston Lawson was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 3 1/4 inches.

AZUSA — Vanguard University finished eighth in the meet, with no athletes finishing in the top five in any individual event.
